Suero Spins Seven Solid Innings in BG's 1-0 Loss
June 27, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Comstock Park, Mich. - Bruedlin Suero made his first appearance for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) of the season, and he gave the bullpen much-needed rest by tossing seven innings. He allowed just one run, but that run was enough for the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Friday night.
With former Tigers manager Jim Leyland in attendance, Suero (0-1) turned in a performance the legendary skipper would be proud of, as he tied a career-high with seven innings, and conceded just one run on five hits. He was incredibly efficient on the night as well, as it took only 70 pitches. At one point, Suero retired 14 batters in a row.
The only blemish on Suero's line occurred in the second. Following a strikeout to begin the frame, Wynton Bernard and Grayson Greiner hit back-to-back singles, and Bernard was sent home for the only run of the game on a single to right field by Willy Adames.
Bowling Green nearly tied the game in the third, but a throw ensured the lead was safe for the Whitecaps. Kean Wong smashed a double down the right-field line to start the rally. Johnny Field followed with a single to left field, but Wong was thrown out trying to score by Raph Rhymes. The play kept the game at 1-0, which proved to be the final margin.
Wong finished with two hits, and he raised his batting average to .327 in the process. Field also finished with a pair of hits, but the offense amassed just five hits collectively on the evening.
Jonathon Crawford (4-2) worked five scoreless innings to earn the win, but his final line was deceiving. He was in trouble nearly every inning, but was able to work out of danger. Julio Felix recorded the final six outs to earn his fifth save of the season, and Montreal Robertson picked up his fourth hold of the year.
The Hot Rods will try to even the series with West Michigan in game two of the four-game set on Saturday night. First pitch will be hurled at 6 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the action on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket beginning at 5:45 p.m. CT with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show. The Hot Rods return home on July 4, highlighted by a double-fireworks show following the game. For tickets and more information, fans can visit BGHotRods.com or call 270-901-2121.
