Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The Lake County Captains exploded for 11 runs over a three-inning stretch and went on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 11-2 on Friday night in the series opener at Fifth Third Field.
The Captains scored two runs in the third inning, starting with a solo home run from Ivan Castillo. They scored five unearned runs in the fourth, all after two men were out, to break the game open at 7-0. The inning was keyed by two costly Dayton errors and a two-run single by Logan Vick. Lake County added four more in the fifth inning to jump ahead 11-0, pushed by a two-run triple by Grant Fink.
The Dragons scored both of their runs in the bottom of the ninth. Tanner Rahier's RBI single brought in one run and the other scored on a bases loaded walk to Avain Rachal.
Lake County starting pitcher Mitch Brown (1-6) earned his first win of the season after a series of hard-luck winless starts. Brown had allowed two runs or less in six of his last seven starts and had left five of those games with the lead including one contest when he departed with a 10-1 advantage, but he had been held without a credited victory.
Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (6-4) suffered the loss. He worked four-plus innings, allowing nine hits and 10 runs (five earned) with two walks and eight strikeouts. Reliever Radhames Quezada replaced Travieso and tossed two innings, allowing one run on two hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Nolan Becker fired two perfect innings, striking out four. Pedro Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth, surrendering one hit.
Dragons pitchers combined to strikeout 17 Lake County batters, a 2014 team high and only three short of the Dragons franchise record.
The Dragons collected five hits by five different players. There were no extra base hits.
The Dragons (2-6) host Lake County (6-2) again on Saturday at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 p.m. Jackson Stephens (0-0, 6.75) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Jordan Milbrath (2-8, 3.39). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner channels 23 and 372). The series continues with games on Sunday (2 pm), and Monday (7 pm).
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
