South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (43-34) gave the fans free bonus baseball and fireworks Friday night at Four Winds Field, but couldn't deliver a victory. Instead it was the Fort Wayne TinCaps (35-42) who celebrated at the end of the 12 inning, 3-1 affair.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps, Class-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Ronnie Richardson led off the game with a walk off of Hawks starting pitcher Blake Perry and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Franmill Reyes collected the RBI with a single to right to score Richardson from second and put the TinCaps ahead 1-0.
The South Bend Silver Hawks, Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, evened the score in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, right fielder Zach Esquerra connected on an opposite field single as took the ball to right. Left fielder Chuck Taylor followed with a fly ball double that carried over Henry Charles' head in left. As the ball rolled to wall, Esquerra rounded third and safely crossed the plate to knot the score at 1-1.
The scoreboard saw little action the rest of the way. Perry kept the TinCaps scoreless after the first as he tossed 96 pitches over seven innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three. The South Bend bullpen also was masterful until the end. Daniel Gibson and Silvino Bracho combined to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth. John Shuttlesworth (L, 1-2) kept the TinCaps off the board in the tenth and eleventh before surrendering two runs in the twelfth. Altogether, the Hawks staff allowed three runs on ten hits while striking out eight.
With one out in the top of the twelfth, catcher Ryan Miller launched a solo home run off a full count offering from Shuttlesworth. The ball ricocheted off the roof of the Tiki Hut in left. Shortstop River Stevens followed with a single to center and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nick Schulz then entered the game to pitch hit for right fielder Luis Tejada. Schulz dropped a singled under the glove of a diving Esquerra in right. Thinking that Esquerra might have caught the ball, Stevens held at second. Jose Jose entered to try and end the TinCaps rally. Stevens moved up to third on a fielder's choice by Charles as Schulz was forced out at second. Second baseman Josh VanMeter singled to right to score Stevens and push the TinCaps lead to 3-1. The Silver Hawks were unable to strike back in the bottom of the 12th against Fort Wayne reliever Tony Rizzotti (W, 3-2).
The Hawks and TinCaps are back in action Saturday night at Four Winds Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Payton Baskette (3-3, 4.43) is scheduled to start for Fort Wayne. Hector Hernandez (4-3, 3.45) will take the mound for South Bend.
