Chiefs Lose 4-3 Friday

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs five-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in a 4-3 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits. The Chiefs are 5-2 in the second half and 42-34 overall.

The Chiefs scored twice in the first inning against River Bandits starter Edison Frias. Vaughn Bryan led off with a triple and scored when CJ McElroy Jr. slashed a single to left. McElroy stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Brian Holberton and scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Chiefs lead.

The game stayed that way into the sixth when Quad Cities scored three runs, the first two against Chiefs starter Chase Brookshire. The first two batters for the River Bandits, Jon Kemmer and Chase McDonald, doubled to cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1 and Brookshire came out of the game. Robert Stock relieved and allowed a bad-hop single over Justin Ringo's head at first base to Ronnie Mitchell that scored McDonald to knot the game at two. Mitchell took third on the play when Bryan's throw from right field went into the third base dugout and Mitchell scored on Tyler White's single.

Quad Cities scored an insurance run in the ninth against Brandon Lee. Marc Wik walked and Thomas Lindauer singled. Steve Sabatino relieved Lee and gave up a single to McDonald to plate Wik and give the River Bandits a 4-2 lead.

The Chiefs got the run back in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough. McElroy was hit by a pitch and Carson Kelly lined a one-out single to left to send McElroy to third. Luis Perez hit a fielder's choice that scored McElroy for a 4-3 deficit. Mason Katz represented the winning run at the plate but struck out swinging on a full-count pitch to end the game.

Brookshire tossed five-plus innings allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Stock pitched the next two innings giving up a run on three hits and a walk. Lee hurled the next 1 1/3 innings yielding a run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout. Sabatino got the final two outs in the ninth but allowed an inherited runner to score.
