
Twins second round pick Nick Burdi joins Kernels

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that Twins 2014 second round pick RHP Nick Burdi has been signed and will join the Kernels and that RHP Fernando Romero has been placed on the 7-day DL, retroactive to June 24th. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
The Twins selected Burdi in the second round (46th overall) out of the University of Louisville. In 32 relief appearances for the Cardinals, he posted a 3-1 record, 0.49 ERA and 18 saves. In 37 IP, he allowed 18 hits and five runs (two earned) with 10 walks and 65 strikeouts.
Romero goes on the DL with a right elbow UCL sprain. In three starts for the Kernels, he has no record and a 3.00 ERA, allowing 13 hits and four runs (all earned) with five walks and nine strikeouts in 12 IP.
The Twins did not announce a corresponding move. With today's transaction, the Kernels roster is at 24 active players, one below the Midwest League maximum of 25, with eight players currently on the DL.
The Kernels begin a four game series tonight at 6:35 pm against the Clinton LumberKings, the Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. It's Halfway to Christmas Night as the first 1,000 fans through the gates receive a free stadium snow globe. Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Elves and a live reindeer will be on the concourse during the game, thanks to 2 Joes Farms, it's a 98.1 KHAK Kernels Friday Mug Club and after the game, enjoy a spectacular FIREWORKS show. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
