Strongman Champion To Be Decided In Trenton

(TRENTON, NJ) The Independence Day celebration at the Trenton Thunder, Minor League affiliate of the New York Yankees, just got even more exciting. The Thunder announced on Wednesday that it will host the Championship Round of the MHP Liberty Strongman Classic immediately following the Trenton vs Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) game on July 4 at 7:05 pm. Independence Day fireworks will be set off following the conclusion of the Stongman Classic, approximately 20 minutes after the baseball game.

This year's MHP Liberty Strongman Classic will take place at three locations over three days and will feature six events including two medleys. The final round, the Atlas Stones Challenge, will take place on the field at Waterfront Park on Sunday, July 4.

Approximately $15,000 in cash and prizes will be at stake and at least five competitors from the famed "World's Strongest Man" TV competition will take part in this year's competition.

MHP Liberty Strongman Classic Schedule:

Friday, July 2, 2010: Katmandu - 50 River View Plaza Trenton, NJ 08611 (609) 393-7300. Overhead Log Press for repetitions - These incredible strength athletes will clean and press a 305-pound log overhead for as many reps as possible. Hummer Tire Dead Lift - with real Hummer tires weighing in at over 125 pounds each and a "Last Man Standing" format the lifts could read over 1000 pounds! This is an evening event with time to be announced.

Sunday, July 4th (afternoon): Welcome America! Tens of thousands of fans pack Benjamin Franklin Parkway in front of the World renown Art Museum each day to check out the festivities. This year, three full events including two grueling medleys will test these world class athletes to the limit. The events are the Conan's Wheel (650 pounds), Tire Flip (900 pounds) - Sled Drag Medley (1200 pounds) and the Shield Carry (400 pounds)- Car Deadlift Medley.

Sunday, July 4th: Atlas Stones Challenge on the field at Waterfront Park. The strongman event is after the game, which starts at 7:05 pm, and right before the fireworks. Baseball game tickets are required for the Strongman Classic and fireworks show. Tickets are available at trentonthunder.com and by calling 609-394-3300.

Gerard Benderoth (5-foot-11, 370 pounds): Long time American Professional and former New York City Police Officer and September 11, 2001 first responder to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Nick Best (6-2, 330): Arnold Classic Competitor who competed in World Championships in 2007 - Las Vegas.

John Conner (6-6, 360):Defending Champion - Kansas City MO.

Karl Gillingham (6-2, 308):Three time "World's Strongest Man" Competitor - Minneapolis, MN

Steve MacDonald (6-2, 310):Former American Champion and Arnold Classic Competitor - Pittsburgh, PA.

Rob Meulenberg (5-11, 300):American Professional - Maine but a former Philadelphia area resident.

Brian Shaw (6-8, 370):Third place at the 2009 "World's Strongest Man" World championships in Malta - Denver, CO.

Josh Thigpen (6-4, 300):Two time "World's Strongest Man Competitor" - Houston, TX.

Glenn Ross (6-1, 400):Three time "World's Strongest Man Competitor" - Ireland.

Steve Kirit (6-2, 265):Three time "World's Strongest Man Competitor" - Pittsburgh, PA.

Plus the Winner of the Amateur Show at Summit Sports Training Show at Villanova on June 6, 2010.

Referees are former professional strongmen Walt Gogola and Mark Keshishian.

The Thunder will host post-game fireworks at the game on Saturday, July 3 courtesy of the Bucks County Courier Times in addition to the Sunday, July 4 game which will feature the Strongman Classic. All Trenton Thunder tickets are available online at trentonthunder.com and by calling 609-394-3300.
