Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The Bowie Baysox were strong in nearly every facet of the game as they beat the Binghamton Mets 6-4 Wednesday. The victory snaps a two-game skid for the Baysox, who handed the B-Mets their seventh consecutive loss.
Third baseman Brandon Waring broke out of a 3-for-27 slump with two doubles, as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. He led the way with four runs, scoring every time he reached the bases. It was a much-needed breakout game for Waring, who had recorded just two extra-base hits in his last 16 games. In total, the Baysox tallied 12 hits, good production from a club that had broken the 10-hit mark just once in their previous 11 games.
Starting pitcher Ryohei Tanaka (3-4, 3.69 ERA) pulled out of a slump as well, breaking a four game losing streak with his best performance of the year. The Japanese hurler pitched 6.0 shutout innings with no walks and six strikeouts while allowing seven hits. It was the first shutout outing for Tanaka since his season debut on April 11, and his highest strikeout count of the year, nearly matching his career high of seven punchouts.
Waring knocked the Baysox first hit of the evening, a one-out double to right-field off Mets lefty Mike Antonini in the second inning. Right fielder Jonathan Tucker drove him in for the opening run with a line drive single to center field and moved to third on designated hitter Robbie Widlansky's single to left. Catcher Caleb Joseph hit a potential double play ball at third base that plated Tucker, but all runners were safe as second baseman Reese Havens failed to catch the ball at second base. The productive inning ended with two men aboard as shortstop Pedro Florimon struck out and outfielder Matt Angle grounded out to third.
Waring was at it again in the fourth frame, as he led off with a single to third base. With two outs, Joseph touched off his second home run of the year to left field to push the Baysox advantage to 4-0.
Guzman flied out to left in the sixth inning, before Waring hit his second double of the night into left field. Tucker walked to put two aboard for Widlansky who hit an RBI single to right-center that plated Waring to make it 5-0. Widlansky finished the game 2-for-4, his first multi-hit game since April 28.
Waring continued to be the impetus for the Baysox, as he walked in the top of the eighth inning. Tucker's fly ball dropped into center field for his second single of the night to put runners at first and second for Joseph, who drove in Waring for his fourth RBI of the night on a single to left field. It was the most runs Joseph had driven in since he recorded five with Frederick on August 30, 2009.
Reliever Pat Egan gave up the shutout in the eighth inning, as the B-Mets manufactured a run off outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis's leadoff double. Nieuwenhuis advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Nick Evans to make it 6-1.
Right-hander Brandon Cooney took the ball for his first Double-A appearance in the bottom of the ninth inning, and soon received a harsh introduction to the higher competition. He walked outfielder Carlos Guzman to start the inning before giving up a base hit to catcher Mike Nickeas. Shortstop Jose Coronado plated Guzman with a double to left and Nickeas scored on a groundout. Cooney was finished after an RBI single by Nieuwenhuis that plated Coronado to make it 6-4 with one out left. Cooney gave up three earned runs in his Double-A debut, after allowing just one through 14 relief appearances for the Frederick Keys earlier in the year.
Pedro Beato came out of the bullpen and earned his third save of the year by striking out Havens to end the game.
Bowie climbs to 18-21 on the season. Though they are in fifth place, they are just five games out of first in the hotly contested Western Division, which has seen three different teams hold first place over the last week.
The Baysox can sweep the rain-shortened two-game series Thursday, as right-hander Tim Bascom (2-2, 3.05 ERA) takes the mound against Binghamton's Eddie Kunz (3-2, 6.21 ERA).
They return to Bowie on Friday, May 21, for a weekend series against the Eastern Division-leading New Hampshire Fisher Cats, a series that is loaded with events that fans will be sure to enjoy. Friday is the Baysox fourth annual Girl Scout Lock-In with activities through the night at the ball park for girl scouts, who are welcome to spend the night at Prince George's Stadium. Saturday is A League of Their Own Night, which will honor and celebrate the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League that inspired the film 'A League of Their Own.' Fans will be able to meet and get autographs from several of the women who played in the league and the game will be followed by the Baysox signature fireworks celebration. Sunday's game, presented by Maryland Public Television, will be the Husky Dog Webkinz toy giveaway for the first 1,000 fans ages 3-12 and will feature a special appearance by Word Girl. To register for the Girl Scouts lock-in, please contact Chris Rogers with the Baysox at (301) 464-4855.
