B-Mets Mount Ninth-Inning Rally, but Fall 6-4 to Bowie

Binghamton entered the ninth down five runs, but rallied to within two and brought the tying run to the plate before Bowie sealed up its 6-4 victory at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday night. Kirk Nieuwenhuis enjoyed a return to form with three hits in his final three at-bats, ending an 0-14 slide. The loss was the seventh straight for the B-Mets, who are back at .500 for the first time since April 19.

In the ninth, Brandon Cooney, the third pitcher of the night for the Baysox, came on for his Double-A debut. Binghamton (19-19) would not allow him to finish the inning. Carlos Guzman walked to start the rally. Mike Nickeas followed, working the count full before singling into right. With two on and no one out, Jose Coronado lined a double down the third base line to plate Guzman. Brahiam Maldonado drove in another run with a slow roller to short that yielded the inning's first out. After Hector Pellot flied out to center, Kirk Nieuwenhuis singled home Coronado, cutting the lead to two.

Bowie (18-21) manager Brad Komminsk had seen enough and pulled Cooney with Reese Havens striding to the plate representing the tying run. Pedro Beato was summoned from the bullpen and made quick work of Havens, striking him out swinging to end the game and earn his third save in four chances.

The Baysox got off to a quick start against starter Mike Antonini. In the second inning, Brandon Waring doubled with one out to reach. Jonathan Tucker followed with an RBI single to plate Waring. Tucker would later score on a fielder's choice to third, making it 2-0 Bowie. Waring recorded three hits and scored a season-high four runs.

Caleb Joseph helped the Baysox add another pair of runs in the fourth courtesy of a two-run homer to left off Antonini, extending the lead to four. Joseph drove in four of the Bowie's six runs.

Antonini was charged with his second straight loss after permitting four runs on six hits over five innings. The southpaw failed to walk a hitter for the fourth start this year.

Bowie plated single runs in the sixth and eighth to jut out to 6-0 lead through seven and a half innings.

The run-scoring was plenty for starter Ryohei Tanaka who came through with his best start of 2010. The Japanese-born righty hurled six, shutout innings, scattering seven hits with six strikeouts for his third win.

The B-Mets finally got on the board in the eighth after Tanaka had departed. Nieuwenhuis led off the frame with a double off reliever Pat Egan. Havens grounded out to second to move Nieuwenhuis up to third, where he scored from on Nick Evans' flyout to right, making it 6-1.

Binghamton roped 11 hits as a team. Mike Nickeas, Carlos Guzman and Jose Coronado all managed two-hit games.

The rain-shortened, two-game series concludes tomorrow at 6:35 PM. RHP Eddie Kunz (3-2, 6.21) gets the call for Binghamton and Bowie will counter with RHP Tim Bascom (2-2, 3.05). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
