Storm Begin Weekend with 6-2 Victory over Black Hawks

KEARNEY, NE. - The Tri-City Storm defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks by a final score of 6-2 in the organization's annual Military Appreciation Night game to begin play in a four-game homestand Friday night at the Viaero Center. The Storm persevered in a penalty-laden battle and the team will host the Black Hawks again tomorrow night for Teacher Appreciation/UNK Night. Mitchell Miller, Graham Gamache, Cole O'Hara, Ilya Nikolaev, Aiden Dubinsky, and Jeremy Wilmer all netted goals for Tri-City in the victory. Tickets are available for tomorrow's game and can be purchased online at www.StormHockey.com or by calling the Viaero Center Box Office during Box Office hours. Puck drop for Saturday's rematch between Tri-City and Waterloo is set for 7:05pm CT.

Mitchell Miller scored his fifth goal of the season with under three minutes to play in Friday's 1st period to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead in the game. Haden Kruse notched his first career assist and first career point in the USHL on the play. Tri-City outshot Waterloo 6-5 in the 1st period and the Storm carried a one-goal lead into the 2nd period.

Friday's extraordinary 2nd period included four goals, an ejection, and 63 penalty minutes. Sam Rinzel scored his first career USHL goal to tie the game at 7:18 of the 2nd period. Cooper Wylie provided the lone assist on the scoring play. Less than a minute later, Waterloo's Patrick Geary was given a five-minute major penalty for boarding, a ten-minute game misconduct penalty, and was ejected from Friday's game following a hit to the back of Tri-City's Haden Kruse. After recording the first point of his USHL career earlier in the game, Kruse left the game due to an injury following the collision. At 9:05 of the period, Graham Gamache netted his fourth goal of the season on the powerplay to give Tri-City another lead in the game. Drew Montgomery and Christian Fitzgerald notched assists for the Storm on the play. The assist for Fitzgerald was his first career assist and his first career point in his USHL career. Fitzgerald made his USHL debut in tonight's game for the Storm after missing the opening eleven games of the regular season due to an injury. The final goal of the 2nd period was scored by Cole O'Hara on the powerplay. O'Hara's goal was his fifth of the season and was scored at 15:09 of the 2nd period. Jeremy Wilmer and Ilya Nikolaev each recorded an assist on the play. Tri-City outshot Waterloo 15-10 in the 2nd period and the game entered the 3rd period with the Storm leading 3-2.

The final three goals of Friday's game were scored by Tri-City in the 3rd period. The first scoring play of the period came from Ilya Nikolaev at 7:41. Jeremy Wilmer provided the assist on Nikolaev's third goal of the season. Aiden Dubinsky scored his first goal of the season at 9:50 of Friday's 3rd period to give Tri-City a three-goal lead in the game. Christian Fitzgerald notched his second assist of the game on the scoring play. The final goal of Friday's Military Appreciation Night game was scored by Jeremy Wilmer at 15:49 of the 3rd period. Wilmer's goal was his team-leading seventh of the 2021-2022 regular season campaign. The Storm outshot the Black Hawks 11-5 in the 3rd period and 32-20 in the game. Tri-City captured a 6-2 victory over Waterloo and improved to 10-2-0-0 on the season.

Arsenii Sergeev recorded the win in net for Tri-City after stopping 18 of Waterloo's 20 shots on goal. Jack Williams dropped the game in goal for Waterloo in a 26 save on 32 shot effort. Jeremy Wilmer was named the 1st Star of the game. Ilya Nikolaev and Christian Fitzgerald collected 2nd Star and 3rd Star honors, respectively. Friday's Military Appreciation Night game was played in front of a crowd of 1,801 at the Viaero Center.
