Mehlenbacher Nets OT Winner, Lumberjacks Prevail 5-4 over Steel

GENEVA, Ill. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks won an overtime thriller, courtesy of Owen Mehlenbacher's game winning goal as the Lumberjacks shot down the Chicago Steel by a final score of 5-to-4 from Fox Valley Ice Arena on Saturday, Nov. 13. Emil Jarventie, Jack Williams, Parker Lindauer and Joey Larson all scored for Muskegon in addition to Mehlenbacher's overtime goal as the Lumberjacks stole two points from Chicago and make their ascent in the Eastern Conference standings.

1st Period

In the opening seven minutes of the game, Finnish forward Emil Jarventie picked up his second career goal in the USHL to give Muskegon the 1-to-0 lead. Jarventie's goal was assisted by Owen Mehlenbacher and Ethan Whitcomb.

But the Steel would respond just 2:55 later, with Michael Emerson's second goal of the season at 9:55 of the first period. Emerson's goal was assisted by Anthony down to tie the game 1-to-1.

The Jacks would once again find the back of the net, courtesy of the captain Jack Williams at 11:53 of the first period. Williams' goal was unassisted to give Muskegon a 2-to-1 lead.

After the first period, the Lumberjacks carried a 2-to-1 lead into the dressing room for the first intermission.

2nd Period

The Lumberjacks would push their lead to two goals with Parker Lindauer's first lamplighter as a Lumberjack since being traded from Tri-City. Lindauer's second goal of the season was assisted by Jacob Guevin and Tyler Hotson to give Muskegon a 3-to-1 lead at 1:57 of the second period.

Then the Steel came marching back with a pair of goals from Jackson Blake and Adam Fantilli, respectively. Blakes shorthanded goal was unassisted at 4:06 while Fantilli's game-tying goal was assisted by Sam Lipkin and Joe Miller to tie the game 3-to-3 in the middle period.

But the tie would not last, as Muskegon's Joey Larson would put the Lumberjacks up by a goal at 11:53 of the second period. Larson's sixth goal of the season was helped by Ben Strinden and Noah Ellis to put the Jacks up 4-to-3.

At the conclusion of 40 minutes, Muskegon once again took a one-goal lead into the intermission, leading 4-to-3 after two periods of play.

3rd Period

Down by one goal, the Steel pulled even with a goal from Adam Fantilli, his second of the game. Fantilli's game-tying goal was assisted by Joe Miller and Jayden Perron at 7:57 of regulation to tie the game 4-to-4.

With both teams tied at four, each team collected one point en route to an extra session to decide the winner.

Overtime

After close chances at each end, it was Muskegon who would earn the extra point, courtesy of Owen Mehlenbacher at 2:19 of three-on-three overtime. Mehlenbacher's game-winning goal was assisted by Joey Larson to give Muskegon the 5-to-4 win in overtime.

In the end, the Lumberjacks scooped up two points and now climb to seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings.

On Deck

The Muskegon Lumberjacks will open a two-game weekend series against the Dubuque Fighting Saints in Iowa on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20, respectively. Both games will start at 8:05 pm EST from Mystique Community Ice Center.
