USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Disorienting Second, Disappointing Third

November 13, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Tri-City Storm scored four unanswered goals Friday at Viaero Center, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 6-2.

An end-to-end opening period included only one shot that found the net. An errant Storm attempt led to a long rebound for Mitchell Miller. The defenseman skated across the high slot before stepping into the right circle for a low wrister that beat a screened Jack Williams at 17:30.

The opening 20 minutes included just under one minute of power play time, but very little of the second was played five-on-five. Waterloo capitalized on a five-on-three power play at 7:18, when Sam Rinzel coaxed a defender to step into the path of goalie Arsenii Sergeev, then Rinzel fired a shot under the crossbar that Sergeev never saw.

However, the Storm retook the lead during a five-minute power play, when Graham Gamache converted a rebound chance at 9:05. Two subsequent penalties were called on the Hawks as the major continued, leading to considerable confusion as to the proper timing of the power plays and at which point different players were supposed to be released from the box.

It looked as though the Hawks would come out with the best of the situation as the teams returned to even-strength; shortly thereafter, Tucker Ness spang Garrett Schifsky on a two-on-one, and Schifsky wired a low shot from the right circle past Sergeev with 5:53 remaining.

However, the tie lasted little more than a minute. With Tri-City on their sixth power play of the period, Cole O'Hara was denied by Williams from close range before scooping up his own rebound for a wraparound at the opposite post.

The ice was tilted toward the Waterloo zone for much of the third period, particularly after the Storm took a multigoal lead at 7:41. Although Tri-City appeared to be scrambling to retain possession of the puck, they managed to keep it just out of reach until it found Ilya Nikolaev for a score from below the right faceoff dot.

Aiden Dubinsky hit the net from a similar spot two minutes later, and Jeremy Wilmer added a final goal at 15:49.

Waterloo and Tri-City get together again on Saturday for a rematch. It will be the final meeting between the teams at Viaero Center before the Storm visit the Cedar Valley for three games later in the season.
