Storm Take Second Weekend Matchup

November 13, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks were assessed 80 minutes in penalties and were shorthanded eight times Saturday during a 5-1 loss to the Tri-City Storm at Viaero Center.

The result followed a 6-2 defeat Friday, which had included six Storm power plays. The Hawks managed to finish the weekend killing off 11 of Tri-City's 14 advantages, including four different five-on-three situations.

For the second consecutive night, the Storm recorded the only goal in the first period. At 8:20, Christian Fitzgerald pulled the puck off the left boards, slinging a pass into the slot for Tanner Adams, who scored on a quick shot under the crossbar.

Waterloo tied the game 4:40 into the second period, capitalizing on a takeaway at the Tri-City blue line. Michael LaStarza swiped the puck, feeding Gavin O'Connell in the left circle. The Hawks rookie waited for a trailing Mason Reiners, who hit the net from close range below the hashmarks.

The Storm's only power play conversion turned the contest and started dominos tumbling. Cole O'Hara's goal from the right circle at 8:46 was the first of three in less than three minutes. Fitzgerald followed with a tip at 10:03, and Ilya Nikolaev slipped through defenders to score at 11:17. A Fitzgerald wraparound with 52 seconds left before intermission capped the scoring for the period and the game.

The third period might just as well have not been played, and five different Hawks were in the dressing room before it was over. Reiners, LaStarza, James Hong, and Tyler Procious were all given misconducts; Tucker Shedd was sent off the ice when offsetting minor penalties were whistled with under two minutes remaining.

Waterloo returns home for the first of four straight games at Young Arena (and to begin seven out of eight on the ice at Commercial Street) next Friday versus the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 p.m. It's a Domino's Family 4 Pack game: four tickets, four sodas, four chuck-a-pucks, and a large Domino's pizza packaged together for $60.
