Madison Capitols News Release

Goals from Capitols forwards Matthew McGroarty and Brendan Lamb two minutes apart, late in the 3rd period help the Capitols leave Youngstown tonight with a 5-3 victory and a series split.

Brendan Lamb scored his first goal of the evening just 5:53 into the game chipping in a puck back door to give the Capitols an early 1-0 lead on the Phantoms. Nathan Lewis and Michael Quinn were credited with the helpers. Later in the 2nd period, the Caps would extend their lead over the Phantoms to 3-0 after a pair of goals from Luke Mittelstadt and Kyle Kukkonen, who scored a 5-on-3 power play. Madison took a 3-0 lead into the 2nd intermission and then things got interesting.

The Phantoms came out in the 3rd period and scored three goals in the opening 6:30 to pull even with the Capitols at three apiece. The Caps didn't succumb to the mounting pressure they were under and battled all the way to victory. Following the Phantoms game tying goal, the Capitols and netminder Simon Latkoczy had to weather a few storms. Latkoczy came up big, making several game saving saves in the ensuing minutes.

"Great response from our group tonight. We did not vary from our identity when we faced adversity," Capitols head coach Tom Upton said. "We kept reminding the team to play our game. Our leaders really took charge and kept our team together in the third. I'm very proud of those guys for stepping up."

Madison's penalty kill got back on track tonight shutting down both Phantom man advantage opportunities. On the flip side, the Caps went 1-for-3 on the power play this evening. The Capitols also took care of business in the shot department outshooting the Phantoms 39-31.

Madison earned their 10th victory of the 2021-22 campaign this evening bringing their season record to 10-3-1. The Capitols are back in action next weekend against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday November 19th at home and then head to Chicago to take on the Steel the following night.
