
Stingrays Topple Gladiators 5-2

Duluth, GA - Forward Tommy Goebel scored two goals, forward Rob Ricci recorded three points (1g, 2a) and goaltender Jared DeMichiel made 41 saves as the South Carolina Stingrays (2-3-0-0) defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators (5-1-0-2) 5-2 in front of 2,869 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Monday night.
Goebel started the scoring on the power play at 7:44 of the first period knocking in a rebound over the right shoulder of Gladiators goaltender Billy Sauer. Defenseman Grant Farrell and Ricci earned the assists. Defenseman Josh Godfrey gave the Stingrays a 2-0 lead at 16:28 with his fourth goal of the season from rookie David deKastrozza.
The Gladiators cut the lead in half on the power play at 1:59 of the second period when forward Ryan Garbutt tapped in a feed from forward Derek Nesbitt past DeMichiel. Forward Chris Poli received the second assist.
The Stingrays responded with three goals in the third period to take a 5-1 lead. Ricci netted his first of the season 35 seconds into the frame from Farrell and forward Trent Campbell. At 8:36, center Jake Hauswirth buried a wrist shot under the right pad of Sauer from deKastrozza and forward Dan Eves. Goebel registered his second goal of the night on the power play at 13:05 deflecting a shot from defenseman Bryan Schmidt. Ricci acquired the second assist.
Gladiators defenseman Matt Case added a late tally at 17:30 from forwards Michael Forney and Matt Francis to complete the game scoring.
Sauer suffered the loss kicking away 40 of 45 Stingrays shots. The Stingrays finished the night 2-for-6 on power play while the Gladiators went 1-for-7.
