Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals announced Monday that they have been assigned forward John Mitchell from their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, and have signed goaltender Shane Connelly to a standard player contract.
Mitchell, who has played four games for Syracuse in his rookie season, played the last four seasons at the University of Wisconsin (NCAA, D-1) and notched 19 points (8g-11a) last season as the Badgers advanced to the national championship game.
In his junior season of 2008-2009, Mitchell tied for the team lead with 15 goals and was fifth on Wisconsin with 26 points while leading the program with 118 penalty minutes.
The Neenah, Wis. native totaled nine goals and seven assists for 16 points in his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Connelly was on Elmira's opening-night roster and played in the Jackals' preseason game on Oct. 8 against the Trenton Devils, making 16 saves in a 4-2 victory. The second-year pro spent the last two weeks with Elmira's AHL affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.
Last season, Connelly split time with Johnstown and South Carolina. With the Stingrays, he went 13-7-5 with a .901 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against average. Connelly tied an ECHL record with three-straight shutouts in mid-February of 2010.
The Cheltenham, Pa. product was a teammate of Mitchell's at Wisconsin and was the full-time starter during his junior and senior seasons, putting together a record of 41-36-11 with a .913 save percentage and a 2.39 goals-against average in his four seasons.
During his first two seasons at Wisconsin, Connelly was the backup goaltender to current Ottawa Senators netminder Brian Elliott and was a member of Wisconsin's 2006 NCAA championship team.
PASSARELLI RELEASED
The Jackals released goaltender Mario Passarelli on Sunday from his contract. He played in the Jackals' 4-3 loss against Gwinnett on Saturday, making five saves on five shots in the third period.
