Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Estero, FL- The Kalamazoo Wings four-game road swing didn't start as planned, as the K-Wings give up three goals in the third period in a 3-2 defeat to the Florida Everblades.

Surrendering a team season-high for penalty minutes in a period with 17, the K-Wings somehow kept the Everblades from getting on the board in the opening 20 minutes. A majority of the minutes occurred midway in the period when defenseman Mitch Versteeg was whistled for slew footing, which earned Versteeg five minutes for the major and a game-misconduct.

Kalamazoo earned the first goal of the defensive battle 7:34 into the second period, when Kory Karlander found Jordan Fulton open in front of the net, for the rookies 3rd goal of the season. The goal extended the point streaks of Karlander and Fulton four games.

Florida's Alex Imbeault (7th, 8th) continued his scoring magic netting two goals in the third period to pull the 'Blades ahead 2-1. Imbeault, who now leads the league with eight goals, has scored a goal in four straight games and has earned points in five in a row.

A turnover behind the Everblades net tied the game midway in the period, as Fulton picked up the loose puck and pass it to Karlander (4th), who extended his goal-streak to four games.

However, Florida wouldn't be denied, with less than eight minutes remaining in the game, a K-Wings neutral zone turnover turned into a three-on-one odd man rush for the Everblades that was cashed in on by Alex Hutchings (1st).

Friday, October 29th (Kalamazoo 2-Florida 6)

Estero, FL- Led by four special team goals, the Florida Everblades defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 6-2 Friday night at the Germain Arena.

In their six previous games, the Everblades hadn't scored the game's first goal, that trend continued on Friday, when Trent Daavettila laid a drop pass to Sam Ftorek (1st). Ftorek looked off AJ Thelen, who was cutting to the net, and blasted a slap shot over the shoulder of Bobby Goepfert 3:43 into the first period.

Penalties marred the rest of the opening period for Kalamazoo. Heading to the penalty box three times in the first, the K-Wings surrendered two power-play goals to the 'Blades. Capitalizing on a five-on-three power-play, Francis Lemieux (2nd) deflected a Kyle Lawson blue line slap shot to tie the game at 1-1.

Late in the period, Mathieu Roy (2nd) found a loose puck in front of Garrett Zemlak, who was making his K-Wings debut, and beat the netminder with a deke to score the go-ahead power-play tally.

Tying the game at 2-2 early in the second period, Brendon Svendsen (1st) stole the puck in the neutral zone and scored shorthanded. The goal extended Svendsen's point streak to four games.

Two minutes after Svendsen's goal, Florida regained the lead with a tally from Matt Beca (1st). Kalamazoo looked poised to tie the game back up with a power-play; however, Alex Hutchings (2nd) deflected a K-Wings shot. The puck went right to the blade of Mathew Pistilli, who quickly passed it to Hutchings for a breakaway goal.

Fighting for the puck near the K-Wings net, Mitch Fadden (2nd) tacked on a late second period goal to push the 'Blades lead to three goals.

Placing salt into the K-Wings wound, Pistilli (3rd) added another shorthanded goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to give the Everblades the four-goal victory.

Saturday, October 30th (Kalamazoo 3-Florida 4-Shootout)

Estero, FL- For the third straight game, the Florida Everblades were able to defend their home ice and leave the Germain Arena with a victory, this time with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Kalamazoo Wings.

For the first-time this season, the Everblades scored before their opposition. On the heels of a penalty to Kalamazoo's Jordan Fulton, Florida's Elgin Reid (1st) blast from the middle of the blue line midway through the period gave the 'Blades a 1-0 lead.

Near the late stages of the opening period, the two teams combined for three goals in 56 seconds. First it would be Florida that extended their lead to two goals with a rebound marker from Matt Beca (2nd).

Off the ensuing face-off, Kalamazoo charged down the ice and cut the deficit to a single goal, when Sam Ftorek's blue line slap shot was deflected past Jaroslav Janus by Trent Daavettila (4th).

After the goal, Andrew Fournier was issued an unsportsmanlike penalty. On the following power-play, Reid (2nd) earned his third point of the period on his second goal of the night to push the 'Blades advantage back to two goals.

Kalamazoo earned the lone goal in the second period when Janus over skated the puck behind his net, Brandon Svendsen (2nd) found it on the side of the net and place wrapped it around into the open net, which extended his point streak to five games.

Pulling even early in the third, Fournier tipped the puck to Patrick Asselin (1st), who carried the zone and ripped a slap shot past Janus.

Neither team would score in the remainder of the third nor in overtime, which forced a shootout. In the extra session, the Everblades outscored the K-Wings 2-0.
