Stingrays Too Much for Warriors in 5-1 Loss
November 10, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - Adam Morrison made 38 saves, while forwards Jack Downing and Joey Diamond each scored twice, as the South Carolina Stingrays (3-5-0-3) topped the Greenville Road Warriors (6-4-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, 5-1 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Monday.
The Road Warriors are now 3-2-0-0 against the Stingrays this season and 2-1-0-0 at SANDLAPPER Securities Rink.
South Carolina jumped on the board at 10:24 of the opening frame when Diamond intercepted a pass in the Greenville zone and skated the other way with only goaltender Jason Missiaen to beat. From the hash marks, Diamond ripped a low shot past Missiaen's glove for his first goal of the season.
The Stingrays took a two-goal advantage at 6:18 of the second when Lee Moffie scored his first goal of the year on the power play. With Emerson Clark in the box for elbowing, Moffie backpedaled at the top of the point and lined a shot through traffic and into the back of the net.
The Road Warriors had a chance to cut the deficit in half midway through the second with 1:10 of time on a 5-on-3 power play, but the Stingrays' goaltender remained perfect making four saves on the attack.
South Carolina continued to bring the heat in the third period and extended its lead to 4-0 with a pair of goals from Downing. Just 50 seconds in, Downing sent a wrist shot from above the circles through traffic and into the net. At 7:57, he scored again on a sweeping shot from the top of the point that beat Missiaen glove side.
Josh Nicholls notched Greenville's only tally at 16:15 of the third when he powered his way to the net from the right side and forced the puck under Morrison. Michael St. Croix earned the helper and now has points in six of his last seven games.
Diamond finished the scoring with an empty netter at 19:54 for the 5-1 final.
Greenville finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Missiaen (2-1-0) made 21 saves and suffered his first loss of the year.
ROSTER MOVE: Road Warriors forward Michael Kantor was recalled on loan by the New York Rangers (NHL) just before the start of tonight's game. The 22-year old appeared in both games against Orlando last weekend and scored his first professional goal with an empty netter on Saturday. Last season, the Lake Forest, Illinois native spent 27 games with Hartford and recorded 113 penalty minutes. He also made three appearances with the Road Warriors and produced three assists and 12 penalty minutes.
The Road Warriors return to SANDLAPPER Securities Rink at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop against Gwinnett. The team is offering $5 tickets at the Box Office while supplies last! It's also Thirsty Thursday featuring $2 domestic beers, hot dogs, fountain drinks and pretzels.
