Last week, the Wheeling Nailers faced their first set of three games in three days, and came away with four of six possible points, as they posted a 2-1-0 record against three clubs from the North Division. On Friday night, Wheeling's Matia Marcantuoni and Evansville's Dylan Bell took center stage, as both players racked up hat tricks in a contest which featured 73 total shots on goal. Unfortunately for the Nailers, a late first period rally by the IceMen put the home team ahead, and they ultimately snagged the 6-3 victory. On Saturday night, Wheeling built 2-0 and 3-1 leads, before the Cincinnati Cyclones knotted the score at three in the middle frame. At the 2:14 mark of the third, David Gilbert put the Nailers back on top for good, as he registered his second game winning goal of the season in the 4-3 triumph. On Sunday afternoon, the local squad returned to the Ohio Valley, where it welcomed the Indy Fuel to town for the first time ever. Zack Torquato and Riley Brace both lit the lamp twice, and Wheeling never trailed, thanks to a 35-save performance by Franky Palazzese in a second consecutive 4-3 win.
Riley Brace, Matia Marcantuoni, and Zack Torquato were lethal over the weekend, as those three players combined to score eight of Wheeling's eleven goals. Brace had multiple points in all three tilts, giving him five multi-point games on the season, while Marcantuoni found his way onto the scoresheet all three days. Franky Palazzese continues to hold the fort in the crease for the Nailers, as he has made eight straight starts, going 5-3-0. Sunday's 38-shot effort by Indy marked the second highest shot total that Palazzese has faced in his rookie campaign. In Saturday's game, Clark Donatelli earned his 100th win as Wheeling's head coach, making him the second person to reach that plateau. The Nailers are 5-0-0 when at least one power play goal is scored by either team, and 0-3-0 in games when both penalty kills are perfect. The team with the lower shots on goal total has dominated the early part of the season, going 8-0-0.
This Week
Fri. 11/14 Orlando Solar Bears @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35
Sat. 11/15 WHEELING NAILERS @ Indy Fuel, 7:35
This week, the Wheeling Nailers will take the ice twice, doing so once at home and once on the road. On Friday night, the Nailers will welcome the Orlando Solar Bears to town, as Wheeling looks for its first ever win against Orlando in five tries. The Solar Bears will be playing their third of 13 consecutive road games, and are currently mired in a slump, having gone 0-5-2 in their last seven games, following a 3-0-0 start. Orlando boasts a familiar face in its lineup, as Denver Manderson recorded 69 points in 80 games with Wheeling from 2011-14. On the other side of the ice, the Nailers could be nicknamed Orlando North, as five players spent time with the Solar Bears at some point in their careers. On Saturday night, Wheeling will make its first ever visit to Fairgrounds Coliseum, where it will face-off with the Indy Fuel for the second time in seven days. Indy has already played ten games this season, which is tied for third most in the league. The Fuel's record currently stands at 2-5-3.
