South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Michael Dubuc scored his 12th goal of the year in the third period in what turned out to be the game winning goal, as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Mississippi Sea Wolves 3-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"I didn't really like the way we played in the first period," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But the final 40 were a different story. We really competed hard in the last two periods."
The Stingrays started out strong in the first period as they took an early 1-0 lead on Scott Romfo's second goal of the season. Romfo took a shot from the point which was tipped by a Mississippi defenseman and sailed over the glove of Ryan Munce. The goal came at 4:07 of the period and was assisted by Jeff Corey and Paul Kelly. The lead was short lived however, as Mississippi's Ryan Menei tied things up with his third goal of the year just :41 seconds later. Menei would get his second goal of the night, at 15:35, off a rebound in front of the crease to give the Sea Wolves a 2-1 lead.
The Stingrays didn't take much time to tie things up at two apiece. Just 3:49 into the second period, Maxime Lacroix would get his team leading 12th goal of the year off a rebound of a Brad Farynuk shot. The goal was assisted by Michael Dubuc and Farynuk and was the only goal scored in the second period, as the teams remained tied after 40 minutes.
The Stingrays retook the lead in the third period for good when Michael Dubuc got his 12th goal of the year, tying him with Lacroix for most on the team. After getting stopped on the short side, Dubuc took the puck behind the net and wrapped it in past Munce. The goal came at 12:50 and was assisted by Travis Morin.
The winning goaltender was Ian Vigier who stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Munce who stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-6 on the power play while killing off all six short handed situations they faced.
