March 13, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
ESTERO, Fla. - Jarrett Konkle netted two goals and an assist, while Peter Szabo scored the deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the South Carolina Stingrays to their fourth straight win by coming-from-behind to defeat the Florida Everblades 7-6 before 6,123 at Germain Arena.
With the win, South Carolina ties idle Augusta for fourth place in the ECHL's South Division.
"We didn't quit, despite trailing by two goals on two occasions," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "It was Konkle's coming out party. He had his best game of the season. It was an emotional roller coaster, but I'm thrilled with the win."
South Carolina (30-23-7, 69 points) opened the score at 7:05 of the first period. Konkle unleashed a wrist shot from the slot beating goaltender Justin Peters, who was making his debut for Florida after being assigned by Albany of the American Hockey League, for his seventh of the season. Helpers went to Brendan Bernakevitch and Donny Grover, who was reassigned by Hershey of the AHL earlier in the day.
Florida (37-18-5, 79 points) tied the score on a 5-on-3 power play. Jarret Lukin netted his fourth of the campaign getting the puck past netminder Davis Parley at the 18:16 mark. Former Stingrays' Dustin Johner and Ryan Brindley garnered assists.
Just 34 seconds later, the Everblades capitalized on a 5-on-4 man advantage. Derek Damon hammered a shot from just inside the blue line past Parley to notch his 17th tally of the year from Brad Zancanaro and Brent McDonald, who was activated off the injured reserve after missing the last six weeks.
The score remained 2-1 for Florida into the third period, when the floodgates opened. South Carolina scored five times, as T.J. McElroy, Chris Chaput and Matt Reid scored within a 56 second span. Cail MacLean made it a one-goal game with under five minutes remaining, then Konkle tied the score with 47 seconds left in regulation with the Stingrays net empty.
Florida tallied four goals in the third from Adam Taylor, Reggie Berg, Jonathan Lehun and Vince Bellissimo.
In the shootout, Konkle scored in the fourth round and Szabo ended the game in South Carolina's favor in the fifth round.
South Carolina finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while Florida converted on 2-of-6 opportunities. Stingrays outshot the Everblades 29-28.
