Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers, announced in conjunction with the ECHL that rookie forward Mathieu Melanson has earned In Glas Co ECHL Player of the Week honors for the week of March 5-11, 2007.
The 6-foot and 198-pound Melanson had six points (4g-2a) and a plus-minus rating of +6 as the Thunder swept a three-game series at home against Victoria to remain in the sixth spot in the National Conference.
After scoring a power-play goal and the game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory on Mar. 7, the 21-year-old scored a goal and had an assist in back-to-back games, a 5-4 shootout win on Mar. 9 and a 4-3 shootout win on Mar. 10.
Born in New York City and signed by Stockton as a free agent on Feb. 21, Melanson has scored a goal in every game except one and has 12 goals and 17 points in 10 games. He has scored two points in each of his last four games and has a five-game goal streak (6g) and a five-game point streak (6g-3a).
Selected in the eighth round (251st overall) by the Minnesota Wild in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Melanson played four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League where he had 238 points (106g-132a) and 243 penalty minutes in 259 regular season games and 50 points (30g-20a) and 67 penalty minutes in 45 playoffs games for Chicoutimi and Quebec from 2002-06.
He helped Quebec win the Memorial Cup in 2006 after having career highs in the regular season with 42 goals, 44 assists and 86 points in 59 games and in the postseason with 25 goals, 15 assists and 40 points in 23 playoff games.
On behalf of Mathieu Melanson, a case of pucks will be donated to a Stockton area youth hockey organization by In Glas Co, the exclusive puck supplier for the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, In Glas Co has donated more than 15,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
The Thunder continues its eight-game homestand with a game against the Idaho Steelheads on Wednesday, March 14, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Stockton Arena. The game can be heard live on the internet (free-of-charge) and is available for viewing at a $6 "pay-per-view" charge at www.stocktonthunder.com (courtesy of B2 Networks).
