South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays trailed twice to Gwinnett but came back both times and beat the Gladiators 3-2 in a shootout at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
"I didn't like the way we played at certain parts of the game," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But we battled back and got a big win here tonight."
Early in the first period the Gwinnett Gladiators took a 1-0 lead when defenseman Scott Marchesi broke away from the Stingray's defense and scored his second goal of the season passed Michael Neuvirth. The goal was assisted by Jordan Fox and came at the 2:02 mark of the period. The Rays would answer back at 15:05 when they would score their second short handed goal of the season. Maxime Lacroix got his sixth goal of the year from Sasha Pokulok and Travis Morin tying the game up at one.
The second period, much like the first, got underway with the Gladiators taking the lead. While on the power play, Pat Bateman got his fourth goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Bateman's goal was assisted by Dirk Southern and Josh Engel at 10:33. But, much like the first period, the Rays were able to answer back. This time it was Steve Pinizzotto who was able to tie up the game. Pinizzotto got his fourth goal of the year from Victor Dovgan, playing in just his first game of the season, at 14:15.
The South Carolina Stingrays had the first real opportunity in the third period. Michael Dubic had a breakaway but was pulled down from behind in front of Josh Johnson. Dubic was given a penalty shot at 0:41 of the period but was unable to score to take the lead. After the rest of the period went by scoreless, and overtime did the same, the Rays headed to a shootout for the first time this season.
In the shootout, the Rays shot first. The second and third shooters for the Rays, Trent Campbell and Paul McIlveen, scored to give the Rays the 3-2 victory over the Gladiators.
The winning goaltender was Michael Neuvirth who stopped 46 of the 48 shots he faced and four of the five shots in the shootout. The losing goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced and three of the five shots in the shootout. The Rays went 0-5 on the power play while killing off seven of the eight short handed situations they faced.
The Stingrays will be back in action on Wednesday when they once again travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:00 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN 910 The TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 6:45
