Johnstown Chiefs News Release

TROY, OH - The Johnstown Chiefs (10-3-0) extended their winning streak to seven games with a solid 4-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers on Saturday night.

The first period had all of the makings of a big-time match up between North Division heavyweights. It was tight checking throughout the opening frame as both teams looked for the early lead. Petr Pohl was the one who broke through for Johnstown first.

David Schulz used his hand to knock down a centering pass in the Chiefs' end, and Pohl picked up the loose puck. The former Bomber raced down the right wing and beat Tyler Plante with a wrist shot at 7:01. Things got a bit chippy after that with Greg Gallagher and Ryan Garlock picking up fighting majors. Once things settled down, Kyle Wharton was able to extend Johnstown's lead with a power play goal at 15:40. Ryan Del Monte won a faceoff back to the point, and Mike Knight fired it on net to pick up the other assist.

Dayton came out very strong in the second period and used that effort to gain the manpower advantage. Johnstown was faced with a 1:30 two-man disadvantage, but Kris Mayotte and the defense held the fort, and kept the Bombers off the board. Then with the Chiefs on the power play Jon Landry rifled a one-timer from Wharton past Plante for a 3-0 Johnstown lead. Ryan Garlock earned the secondary assist on Landry's fourth power play goal and sixth overall. Dayton was given another 5-on-3 advantage later in the second and beat Mayotte for the first time with Jarret Lukin scoring at 17:54.

Johnstown made it to the third looking to maintain their 3-1 advantage, and stay perfect on the season when leading after two periods. They did just that as the Chiefs put on a defensive clinic in the final frame by limiting the Bombers to just six shots, and killing off three penalties in the process. Dayton pulled Plante for the extra attacker while on the power play late in the third, but they couldn't convert, and after the Chiefs got back to full strength Garlock scored an empty-net goal with 56 seconds remaining. Randy Rowe and Trevor Hendrikx earned assists on the goal.

Kris Mayotte won his sixth consecutive decision by making 20 saves on 21 shots, while the Chiefs' power play went 2-for-5.
