Sarnia Sting News Release
OTTAWA - The Sarnia Sting dropped a 5-0 decision to the Ottawa 67s, Friday night in Ontario Hockey League action in front of 3,213 fans at the TD Place Centre.
The loss, Sarnia's fourth in their last five games, dropped their overall record to 23-18-4-2.
The 67s, who hold one of the best home records in the league with just four regulation time losses, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period and held a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Liam Herbst kicked out all 21 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season for Ottawa.
"It's certainly not the game we wanted," said Sting Assistant Coach, Chris Lazary. "But there is no excuses. We had heavy legs to start and we just couldn't recover. We didn't execute as a group. We looked like a young team for the first time in awhile."
He added, "Defensively we were too loose. Their guys were cycling the puck in our end and we couldn't cut it off. Everything starts with the play on defence. We need to be better making that first pass and also better playing away from the puck."
Nathan Todd led Ottawa with two goals while Jeremiah Addison, Trent Mallette and Brendan Bell notched singles.
Taylor Dupuis took the loss in goal for the Sting as he faced 26 shots.
For the first time in over a month the Sting had a full compliment of 20 players. They welcomed back forwards Nikita Korostelev, Patrick White and Noah Bushnell, along with goalie Justin Fazio.
But the Sting lost defenceman Josh Chapman late in the third period when he was given a five-minute major for a head check and automatic game misconduct. He could face further discipline.
The Sting complete their mini two-game Eastern Ontario road trip when they battle the Frontenacs Saturday night in Kingston. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on 1070 CHOK Radio.
"The challenge is to be ready to play against Kingston," said Lazary. "We need to shoot pucks more. I think in our last 10 games we've been outshot in almost all of them. We also have to be better on defence."
Sarnia's next home game is Thursday night when they host the Kitchener Rangers beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the RBC Centre.
Tickets for all remaining home games are on sale daily at the RBC Centre Box Office, by calling 519-541-1717 or going online at Sarniasting.com.
