North Bay Battalion News Release

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Blake Speers and Justin Bailey scored in a five-round shootout to give the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds a 4-3 victory Friday night over the North Bay Battalion, extending the 'Hounds' Ontario Hockey League winning streak to nine games.

Anthony DeAngelo, Nick Ritchie and Tim Gettinger scored in regulation time for Sault Ste. Marie before a crowd of 4,573. Goaltender Brandon Halverson faced 29 shots through overtime as the Greyhounds moved their won-lost-extended record to 36-9-2 for 74 points atop the West Division and Western Conference.

Kyle Wood scored all three goals for the Battalion, with Mike Amadio assisting on two. Jake Smith faced 41 shots through overtime in goal for North Bay, 23-12-10 for 56 points, second in the Central Division.

Nick Moutrey returned to the Battalion lineup after missing eight games with a sprained ankle suffered Jan. 9 in a 6-3 loss to the host Plymouth Whalers, his second game after a trade from the Saginaw Spirit.

Wood's 15th goal of the season, at 16:28 of the third period, precipitated overtime. With Halverson caught wandering, Ryan Kujawinski beat DeAngelo to the puck behind the net and fed the disc to Wood, who put it into the vacant cage. Brett McKenzie had the second assist.

Wood became the fourth Battalion defenceman to score as many as three goals in a game and the first since Bobby Sanguinetti netted four in a 7-1 rout of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at Brampton on Nov. 11, 2007.

With the game tied 2-2 in the third period, the Greyhounds appeared to take the lead at 8:11 when Connor Boland put the puck behind Smith, but referee Sean Reid waved off the play, ruling that Michael Bunting had made contact with the goaltender in the crease.

Gettinger scored to put Sault Ste. Marie in front at 14:28. Smith made the save on a Bailey shot from the right-wing circle but kicked the rebound to Gettinger, who shot the puck past the sprawling goaltender.

The Greyhounds held a 5-2 edge in shots in overtime, with Smith producing big saves on Sergey Tolchinsky and Ritchie.

In the shootout, Smith foiled Tolchinsky before Speers scored. Smith then denied Jared McCann and Ritchie before Bailey connected. Kujawinski shot first for the Troops and was stopped. Amadio scored, but Halverson denied Nick Paul, Wood and, to seal the win, Moutrey.

Wood opened the scoring on the power play at 4:42 of the second period when he hammered a Brenden Miller pass over Halverson's blocker from the left circle. Amadio picked up the second assist.

Defenceman DeAngelo replied 54 seconds later, picking up a loose puck in the deep slot and firing a wrister into the top corner as Bunting, without penalty, tied up Hampus Olsson, who had a chance to clear the disc.

Ritchie gave the home side its first lead at 12:36. Speers seized a turnover in the neutral zone, barreled down the left wing and sent the puck into the goalmouth, where a driving Ritchie converted.

Wood tied it at 15:05, four seconds into a two-man advantage as he slipped alone into the deep slot and fired an Amadio feed from behind the net past Halverson's glove. It was Wood's team-leading 11th power-play goal.

Sault Ste. Marie held a 12-10 edge in shots in the period. Smith made fine stops on Boland, DeAngelo and Bailey, while Halverson was tested twice by Alex Henriksson.

Each team had 10 shots in the scoreless first period. North Bay had two power plays, testing Halverson with chances by Amadio, Kujawinski, Paul, Henriksson and McKenzie.

The Battalion hosts the Niagara IceDogs at 2 p.m. Sunday.
