Sting Blank the Attack

Goaltender Justin Fazio is on a roll, posting his second straight shut-out following A 7-0 white wash last Saturday night over the Guelph Storm. A crowd of 2,783 looked on with approval as Sarnia Sting beat the Owen Sound Attack 1-0 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre,

Fazio stopped 25 shots as he recorded his 11th win of the season and his third shutout. He was named the game's first star.

Jeff King scored the only goal of the game for the Sting. Troy Lajeunesse and Pavel Zacha frew the helpers on the goal, which capped of a pretty three way passing play at 4:07 of the second period with the Sting on the man advantage. It was King's second goal of the season and he was voted as the second star.

Not to be out done, Michael McNiven played very well in net for the Owen Sound Attack. He stopped all but one of the 31 shots directed at him. He could not be faulted for the only goal he allowed and for his effort was selected as the second star.

The win puts Sarnia in sole posession of 5th place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 11-7-2-0. aThe win broke a dead lock between the two clubs who came into the contest tied with 24 points. Sarnia continues to hold down second place in the Western Division behind the front runner, Windsor Spitfires.

With all the rage in hockey about the nets getting bigger, the two teams proved you don't need a lot of goals to garner excitement. The game was played at a brisk pace and with only seven minor penalties, was completed in less than two hours.

Both goaltenders had their moments, coming up with big saves and keeping their team in the hunt for a win.

The first period was dominated by the Sting as the ice was tilted in the Attack end. Sarnia out shot Owen Sound 11-5, but the game was scoreless through the first twenty minutes.

The second period was more of the same as Sarnia had the better of the shot totals - 15-7 and managed to get one by McNiven.

At the 4:07 mark, Zacha fed Lajeunesse, who in turn on his back hand sent the pass to King, who was making his way to the net. He quickly put the puck top shelf over the shoulder of McNiven, for the only goal of the game and the game winner.
