
Wolves Drop Heartbreaker to Petes in OT

The Sudbury Wolves dropped a heartbreaker to the Peterborough Petes 6-5 in overtime Friday night at the Sudbury Arena. It was a back and forth game and the Wolves played their hearts out, but it was the Petes who came away with the victory.
The Wolves fell behind early in the 1st as Peterborough scored on their first powerplay opportunity of the night. Greg Betzold scored to give the Petes the 1-0 lead. DMITRY SOKOLOV came out flying in the opening frame for the Wolves and generated numerous chances but could not beat Petes' goaltender Dylan Wells. At the end of 1st, shots on goal were 17-10 in favour of Peterborough.
The Wolves and Petes played an eventful 2nd period of play. Peterborough took an early 2-0 lead with goal in the first 30 seconds. The Wolves were able to respond quickly as KYLE CAPOBIANCO scored a powerplay goal to get the Wolves on the board. MICHAEL PEZZETTA and DMITRY SOKOLOV picked up the assists. MATT SCHMALZ then tied the game at two with a breakaway goal assisted by DAVID LEVIN. The Petes would not roll over as they responded with two goals to take a 4-2 lead. The Petes lead was short-lived however, as DMITRY SOKOLOV sniped a beautiful goal from the top of the circle to pull the Wolves within one. LEVIN and CAPOBIANCO added the helpers. After 40 minutes, shots were 31-26 in favour of Peterborough.
The Wolves battled hard in the 3rd period and SOKOLOV continued his phenomenal play. He scored two goals in the period to get the hat-trick and give the Wolves a 5-4 lead. LEVIN also continued his strong play, as he picked up his third assist of the game. After getting the go ahead goal with 1:11 remaining, Peterborough drained the life out of the arena, scoring with 1.8 seconds left in the game to force overtime. After regulation, the shots were 41-31 for the Petes.
In overtime, the Wolves had a number of chances, however Dominik Masin scored the winner for the Petes. The final shots on goal were 44-34 for Peterborough.
The Wolves next home game is Sunday, November 22nd when the Kingston Frontenacs visit the Nickel City for the one and only time this season at 2PM.
