Stevens & McElhenie Pace Caps' Romp of Team USA

Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (14-17-2-2) put up three-goal periods in the first and final periods to bookend a steady 6-1 victory over the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program (15-17-3-1 USHL) at the Alliant Energy Center on Friday night.

The Capitols' offense would not take long to go into a workhorse mode, as Brody Stevens got the Caps off and racing at 2:43 with his third of his Capitols' career to make it 1-0.

The play began when a pair of Team USA skaters collided in center ice, setting the Caps up on an odd-man rush. Stephen Kleysen picked up his first assist with Madison, shuffling the puck to Stevens on the right side, who then picked the top corner over Team USA goalie Adam Scheel to put Madison to the lead.

The Americans had thoughts of making the night tough for the Capitols just over six minutes later as Evan Barratt picked up his second goal against the Capitols in the season series, taking a back door feed from Grant Mismash and beating Garrett Metcalf at 8:46.

From there, the Capitols would run the show for the remainder of the period, more specifically from a pair of local products, Cole Hults (Stoughton) and Luke McElhenie (Sauk City).

First, it was McElhenie who skated hard to the front of the net, found an Eetu Selanne shot in the feet of Scheel, and shuffled the rebound under the fallen goaltender's legs at 9:28 for his sixth of the season.

The rugged forward was not done, though, as just 2:28 later, he parked himself in front once again and redirected a Hults wrist shot deftly into the yawning cage for a 3-1 edge.

The second period saw the Capitols lose their discipline on a few occasions, as Team USA had six minutes worth of power play opportunities, but failed to score on any occasion as Metcalf and the defense had replies to each of the Team USA bids. At the other end, the Capitols could only muster four shots, but the first period edge provided the home team with the same two-goal edge heading into the final frame.

Tyson McLellan added more insurance for the Capitols just 32 seconds into the third period, scoring his fourth goal in four games. Stevens raced around the net from the right wing side and slid a perfect pass through the crease to McLellan at the right post.

The Capitols clamped down defensively from that point, and Team USA would only muster five shots in the entire final period. Stevens picked up a third point on his night, once again, by using his speed down the wing. This time, he fired a hot pass to Alec Broetzman at the left post, and Broetzman tapped it by Scheel at 17:31 to make it 5-1.

Just for good measure, Sam McCormick and Ryan Lohin joined the party in the final minute, as Lohin tipped a McCormick pass on net, then picked up the rebound to beat Scheel at 19:25 to finish the night's scoring.

Metcalf ended his evening with 22 saves for his eighth win of the season. The Capitols end their weekend set with Team USA on Saturday for Outdoors Night, presented by Cabela's and 101.5 WIBA-FM. The first 500 fans in attendance on Jan. 23 will receive specialty orange Capitols' hats, courtesy of Cabela's.
