Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Muskegon Lumberjacks scored two unanswered goals in the third period, but fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 3-2. The Lumberjacks fall to (14-15-3) on the season, and the USHL leading RoughRiders improve to (23-9-3) on the season.
The Lumberjacks controlled most of the play throughout the first period. Jake Coleman was able to draw a penalty midway through the first period, however the Lumberjacks were unable to breakthrough on their first power play opportunity of the night.
Late in the first period, the RoughRiders netted the first goal of the game, when Taylor Brierley wristed a shot through a couple of bodies, into the back of the net, to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead. Twenty-five seconds later, Cedar Rapids doubled their lead, when Jack Ahcan received a pass back door and blasted a shot past Lumberjacks goaltender Joey Daccord, to give the RoughRiders a 2-0 lead.
In the second period, the RoughRiders received two power play opportunities, but Daccord and the Lumberjacks were able to retain the two-goal deficit. However, with under one minute to go in the second period, Tyler Irvine netted his third goal of the season lifting the puck past Daccord, to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
The Lumberjacks added pressure in the third frame. Mitch Eliot scored unassisted after firing a wrist shot from the blue-line to cut the Lumberjacks deficit to two. Then, with just over a minute left in the game, Matej Paulovic blasted home a rebound to make it a one-goal game. Rem Pitlick and Trevor Hamilton notched the assists on the goal.
Muskegon created more opportunities in the final minute of play, but were unable to get anything past RoughRiders goaltender Ben Blacker, and fell to Cedar Rapids 3-2.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks (14-15-3) will look to rebound tomorrow, when they challenge the Des Moines Buccaneers (15-18-2) at 8:15 p.m. The next Muskegon Lumberjacks home game is February 5th against the Bloomington Thunder.
