Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm scored two goals in the final minute of the second, blitzing the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 4-1, in front of the Storm's second straight sell-out Friday at the Viaero Center.
Nico Sturm and Carson Meyer struck 36 seconds apart near the end of the middle period to give Tri-City a three-goal lead. The linemates each finished with a pair of points, led by Meyer's two goals.
The Storm has tied a season-best three-game win streak and remains even with the Lincoln Stars for the Western Conference lead (41 points).
Sturm started the Storm's second-period scoring. The 20-year-old center received a centering feed from Jake Wahlin and potted to give the Storm a 3-1 edge with 44 seconds left. John Marino earned the secondary assist.
Meyer stayed on the ice with Sturm and Wahlin for the next shift and the line connected. On Sturm's slow shot, Meyer got a piece with 8.1 seconds left in the second, helping Tri-City to a three-goal edge entering the third.
Amidst the Storm's goals, Jake Kielly won his fifth straight start to move to 11-5-1-1 this season. The native of Eden Prairie, MN is second in the league with a .925 save percentage.
Dubuque Head Coach elected to pull goalie Hunter Miska, who let in four goals on 22 shots, after the second. Jaxon Castor, replacing Miska in relief for the first time this season, made seven stops in the third.
Miska kept Tri-City off the board through the first half of the first. Carson Meyer broke the ice on Miska, winging a shot over his blocker, assisted by Mattias Goransson and Jake Wahlin, at 9:49 of the first.
The scoring heated up late in the first. Wade Allison ripped a far-post shot from the right wing, assisted by Dan Labosky, with 1:41 left. The 20-year-old Labosky engineered the rush by tapping it to Allison at neutral ice.
Allison has 16 goals this season, six goals in his last seven games and 14 tallies in his last 16 contests.
Just 1:04 later, in the final minute of the first, Dubuque's Casey Johnson solved Kielly for the only time on a high slot wrist shot, assisted by Petter Makitalo and Zach Solow.
Kielly saved the final fifteen shots faced and helped Tri-City hold the Saints to 0-for-4 on the power play. The Storm also finished 0-for-4 on the man up.
Before the game, six children affected by cancer were given a "game day" experience with Storm players. Tri-City auctioned off its one-time-only jerseys after the game to benefit the Sammy's Superheroes Foundation.
Saturday at 7:05 p.m. is Casino Night, with fun prizes handed out at the Viaero Center. Plus, it's a Coca Cola Family Four Pack, with four tickets, hot dogs, cokes and chips for $44. Game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Breeze 94.5 FM with David Fine on the Viaero Wireless Pregame Show.
