Capitols Wind Down Homestead against Team USA U17's
January 22, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release
Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (13-17-2-2) begin their final home weekend until March on Friday evening as they host the U.S. U17 National Team Development Program (15-16-3-1 USHL) at the Alliant Energy Center.
The night marks another WJJO Dollar Beer night, with doors to the Coliseum opening beginning at 6 p.m.
The Capitols had their way with the U17's in October at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. Alex Payusov scored his first three goals as a Madison Capitol in an 8-1 victory on Oct. 16, completing just the second hat trick in team history in the process. Luke McElhenie added two goals as well on a night that saw the Capitols score multiple goals in each period.
The very next night, on Oct. 17, the Capitols were able to come back from a 2-1 deficit in the third period to force overtime and eventually a shootout. Ryan Edquist was sturdy in the Capitol goal crease, denying 33 Team USA offerings and keeping all three shootout attempts out of the goal.
The youthful U17's, composed of players in the 1999 birth year, have struggled against USHL competition of late, dropping six of their last seven matchups against league opponents. They have allowed four or more goals to the opposition in six of those contests.
The Capitols enter this weekend having played each of the last five games on home ice, compiling a 2-2-1-0 record thus far on the homestand.
Following this weekend's two-game set against Team USA, the Capitols will only see home ice once in the next 14 games as they embark on a lengthy road trip comprised of games against five Western Conference opponents.
The Capitols end the weekend set with Team USA on Saturday for Outdoors Night, presented by Cabela's and 101.5 WIBA-FM. The first 500 fans in attendance on Jan. 23 will receive specialty orange Capitols' hats, courtesy of Cabela's.
