Stellar pitching earns River Cats series split in front of over 9,000 fans

West Sacramento, Calif. - Led by solid pitching and two early runs, the Sacramento River Cats (10-8) took Sunday's series-finale against the Oklahoma City Dodgers (11-7) by the score of 2-1.

Right-hander Sean Hjelle (2-0) tossed a season-high 6.0 innings, striking out four while allowing one run on four hits and no walks. The Giants' No. 26 prospect on MLB Pipeline lowered his ERA to 1.96, throwing 54 of 76 pitches for strikes.

The bullpen continued its hot stretch. Right-hander Gregory Santos (1.0 inning), righty Jeremy Walker (1.2 innings), and lefty Joey Marciano (0.1 innings) combined to shut down the Dodgers, with Marciano finishing the game off with his second save of the season.

Center fielder Bryce Johnson started the scoring in the first when he singled, stole second, advanced to third on right fielder Austin Dean's single, and came home on a single by first baseman Jason Krizan.

Sacramento doubled its lead an inning later when shortstop Arquímedes Gamboa plated second baseman Alex Blandino with a single to left field.

Additional Notes

Johnson, who led the PCL with 30 stolen bases in 2021, is now 8-for-8 in 2022 and tied for the league lead.

Sunday marked the River Cats' first day game victory of the season. They entered the day 0-5.

Left fielder Ka'ai Tom lined an absolute rocket for a double in the eighth with the ball having an exit velocity of 109.1 MPH.

Sunday was the second straight day with over 9,000 fans in attendance at Sutter Health Park, with 9,265 enjoying the game. The River Cats set a season-high on Saturday with 9,294 on hand to watch the 12-1 victory.
