Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho¾ The Idaho Steelheads will kick off its popular Qwest Hat Trick Reading Program on Wednesday, November 14 in partnership with local public libraries. This week is Idaho Family Reading Week.

The Reading Program encourages children to read with incentives and is sponsored by Qwest Communications.

Children can earn hockey tickets, an Idaho Steelheads cap and be recognized at a public skate March 1 at Qwest Arena this winter.

Eligible children, ages 5-13, receive the rewards for scoring three goals, known as a hat trick in hockey terminology. The program will run through February 22, 2008. A bookmark with details can by picked up at participating libraries (Boise, Ada, Eagle, Garden City, Star, Hidden Springs, Kuna and Meridian).

For achieving the first two of the three goals, children earn up to two tickets to an Idaho Steelheads' game.

The first goal is to check out a book at a participating library. The second goal is to read with a family member for at least 20 minutes a day for 7 days. After completing those goals, children can score a hat trick by reading about the Steelheads at www.idahosteelheads.com and writing a 100-word essay about the team. The hat trick nets them a Steelheads cap and a skate at Qwest Arena.

The reading program builds on a formula educators often recommend for developing reading and writing skills, so that children can be more successful as students: encourage them to read often; read together as a family; use the library; and make reading and writing fun.

For more information call Boise Public Library at 384-4200 or any participating library.
