Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Nov. 13, 2007)- Marc Cavosie scored the game-winning goal with 12.4 seconds left in the game as the Columbia Inferno (5-5-1-0, 11 points) overcame a Derek Damon hat trick to beat the visiting Florida Everblades (6-4-0-0, 12 points) 4-3 at the Carolina Coliseum.
The Inferno started the game hot, as defenseman and newly anointed alternate captain Patrick Wellar scored his second goal of the season 2:38 into the first period when his wrister from the slot beat Everblades goaltender Justin Peters' five-hole. Wellar continued his offensive explosion, scoring his second of the night and third goal in three games, 8:27 into the first period with another wrister, this time beating Peters' blocker side from the far point. Winger Jeff Miles assisted on both goals to give him an ECHL-leading 17 points (eight goals, nine assists).
"Patrick Wellar is my kind of player," Inferno head coach Troy Mann said. "He competes every night, and based on the type of team I want on the ice, I thought he deserved to wear the 'A' until Mac Faulkner comes back from injury."
Center Peter Tsimikalis put the Inferno up 3-0 just 30 seconds into the second period when his rebound of a Reid Cashman shot found the back of the net.
However, the Everblades began their assault on the Inferno defensive zone and rookie goaltender Jeff Jakaitis when Damon scored his first of the night at the 14:11 mark of the second period. Damon took advantage of a misplayed puck at the blueline by Wellar, picked up the puck and beat a sprawling Jakaitis stick-side on a breakaway.
Damon scored again 9:42 into the third when he wrapped around the Inferno net and crawled a puck up and over Jakaitis' glove side shoulder to shave the Inferno lead 3-2. He completed the comeback at 17:24 for his sixth goal of the season when he tapped a cross-crease pass from winger Mathieu Melanson past a helpless Jakaitis' outstretched right leg.
The game appeared to be headed to overtime, but center Marc Cavosie notched his second goal of the season when he used a near-identical play of Damon's third goal to beat Peters for the game winner with 12.4 seconds left. Cavosie streaked into the offensive zone, tapping in a sharp pass from Daniel Sparre to win the game for the Inferno. However, the victory would not have been possible without the strong play of Jakaitis, who stopped 40 of Florida's 43 shots.
"He won the game for us tonight, no doubt about it," Mann said. "That kind of game is exactly what I expected from Jakaitis when the Toronto organization signed him this summer."
Peters finished with 26 saves on 30 shots.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Thursday, Nov. 15 to host the Charlotte Checkers. Turkey bowling will be played during the first intermission, courtesy of New 92 FM and Publix supermarkets.
