Steelheads Sign Northern Michigan Rookie
April 1, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads announced today that rookie Nick Sirota has been signed to an ECHL contract and will be in tonight's lineup against the Phoenix RoadRunners at Qwest Arena.
Sirota has completed four seasons of NCAA hockey with Northern Michigan where he tallied 63 points (33g-30a) in 104 games. During the 2007-08 season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward was second in goal scoring as a Wildcat, behind the team's leading scorer, former Steelheads head coach John Olver's son, Mark. (John Olver also served as Assistant Coach to the Wildcats during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.) He served as assistant captain his senior season, and as assistant captain in 2006-07, the Wisconsin native led the team with four short-handed goals and received an honorable mention selection to the CCHA all-conference team.
The Steelheads complete the 2008-09 season this week with three games at Qwest Arena - Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - all against Phoenix. Idaho's 3-2 victory over the RoadRunners Tuesday night knocked Phoenix out of playoff contention.
Idaho begins its quest for a third ECHL Kelly Cup on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Qwest Arena. The seeding order and the Steelheads' opponent for the National Conference, West Division's first round of postseason play is still to be determined.
* End of season team awards will be presented during a pregame ceremony on Saturday.
