Charlotte Checkers News Release
Charlotte N.C. - Despite the buildup as a preview of the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs, the Checkers seemed like they were going through the motions in the first two periods of the game. However, an inspired group stormed out of the gate in the third period trying to erase a two goal deficit which they did but they were unable to retrieve a lead and lost the contest 3-2 to the South Carolina Stingrays.
The only goal of the first period came while the Stingrays worked the power-play and forward Nikita Kashirsky wristed a shot from the right circle that went off the post and in the net past Checkers netminder Maxime Daigneault at 2:39.
South Carolina extended their lead when forward Mike Berge's shot found its way into the net behind Daigneault at 6:16. After forty minutes, the Stingrays held a 2-0 advantage.
The Checkers mounted a comeback to tie the contest during the third period and the first Charlotte goal was scored by Matthew Ford when he blasted in a rebound off a Ken Scuderi shot at 5:06. The Checkers struck again less than a minute later when Ryan Hiller took the puck off a face-off win and spun a shot on goal that beat Stingrays netminder Jonathan Boutin between the legs at 5:54. With the contest tied and momentum on Charlotte's side, they couldn't capitalize despite several good scoring chances. South Carolina withstood the onslaught from Charlotte and scored the go-ahead goal when Spencer Carbery knocked a rebound shot through Daigneault at 12:31. This gave the Stingrays a 3-2 lead and the victory.
The Checkers are playing their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. The next home game takes place on April 4 against the Gwinnet Gladiators at 7 P.M. start. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances. The Checkers are in their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena.
