THREE OUT OF FOUR AIN'T BAD

Recruiting, player signings, player moves, a week in McCall, a lot of practice, new jerseys with fresh name plates and numbers, a few more player moves, and the Idaho Steelheads were ready to defend the ECHL title.

Friday night, before a packed house of 5,208 fans at Qwest Arena, the Steelheads were reminded of why they play the game when returning players from last year's team received their 2007 Kelly Cup Championship rings. After the brief ceremony, the battle of the fish began and fans got to see the team that head coach Derek Laxdal had assembled. In the end, Idaho dropped the home opener 2-1 in overtime to the Victoria Salmon Kings, picking up a point for the regulation play "tie," and added two points on the young season with a 4-2 win over Victoria Saturday.

THE BOMB

Several rookies looked impressive on the ice over the weekend, but Mark Bombersback stood out the most. Named MVP in his senior year last season at Ferris State, the 25-year-old netted a goal in his first pro game Friday, and added two more scores and an assist in Saturday's contest, earning him Aquafina First Star of the Game honors.
