Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The West Coast Hockey League's Idaho Steelheads picked up what was arguably their biggest win of the season Friday night, taking the second straight win on second-place San Diego's ice. Jason Cugnet (19-6-1) stopped 32 shots and recorded his second shutout of the season with the victory. The game marked San Diego's first ever shutout at home during regular season play.

The only scoring came in the second period with Idaho tallying 3 goals in a four-minute span. Derek Paget (2-5-7) scored first at 8:22 in his first game back since October 23rd. At 12:02, Ben Keup (8-10-18) scored his 9th goal this season. Just 17 seconds later, Idaho's Joe Rybar (15-25-40), notched his 15th of the year.

Despite having the league' top power play (23.3%), the Steelheads went 0-7. However, their league-leading penalty kill (88.6%) held the Gulls to 0-6 on the night.

Friday's win marks the Steelheads second shutout against the Gulls this season - Blair Allison recorded the first, a 2-0 final, on October 22 at the Bank of America Centre. The Gulls have one shutout against the Steelheads this season with their 0-2 win in San Diego on December 9th.

In Tuesday's game (January 7th, the first of the series) the Steelheads ended the Gulls' 12-Game Winning Streak. Though San Diego outshot the Steelheads 30 - 14 (Idaho's fewest shots all season and the league's lowest), Idaho's 3 goals prevailed over the Gulls' 2 for the team's 25th win. League-leading goal scorer, Marty Flichel (20-20-40) tallied in the first period to put the Steelheads up by one goal. Martin Vasut (3-9-12) and Adam Copeland (4-5-9) each scored for Idaho in the middle frame to give the Steelheads the 3-0 lead going into the third period. However, the Gulls persevered and Clayton Read (12-16-28) scored 2 late in the third.

The first was an unassisted shorthanded goal at 14:25, and the next came just over a minute later.

Idaho has won its last 4 games, and will be looking for their 5th and a sweep of the Gulls tonight in the last of the three-game series. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 KTIK in Boise with Britt Talbert behind the mic, or by logging on to www.ktik.com.
