Alaska Aces News Release
LONG BEACH, California â B.J. Boxma recorded 27 saves in beating Anchorage for the fifth straight time this season as the Long Beach Ice Dogs scratched out a 3-2 victory before 2,342 Friday night at Long Beach Arena.
Pat Brush needed only 25 seconds to give Long Beach an early lead, as Anchorage goaltender Ryan Person mishandled the puck during a foray out of the crease, allowing Brush to fire into the vacated goal. Former Idaho winger Michal Pinc increased the gap to 2-0 at 11:33 of the first period, but the Aces immediately replied, as Kevin McNeill rammed home a Dean Larson rebound 53 seconds later to slice the deficit in half heading into the middle frame.
Anchorage came out quickly in the second period and was rewarded, as B.J. Young banged in his own rebound at 1:23, giving him goals in three straight games since returning to the lineup after a one-month hiatus due to a shoulder injury. But Chris Peyton converted a three-on-one situation with 2:25 left in the period, restoring the lead for Long Beach at 3-2.
Ice Dogs' netminder B.J. Boxma turned away all eight shots he faced in the third period as Long Beach held on for only its second victory in 13 games. The Aces were outshot 34-29 in suffering their seventh loss in eight games to the Ice Dogs this season, three of which have come by a single goal. Anchorage is just 1-6-1 over its last eight games to fall 12 points behind Fresno in the race for the final WCHL playoff spot.
The Aces (10-23-2) continue their three-games-in-three-night-in-three-cities trip with a date tomorrow night against the Bakersfield Condors at Centennial Garden, with the face-off scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. AST start. Anchorage has beaten Bakersfield (16-12-5) five straight times this year. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
