Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Fresno Falcons tallied three times in the first 4:45 of the final period to overcome a 1-0 deficit and hand the Condors a 3-1 loss in front of 5,520 fans at Centennial Garden on Friday night.
Bakersfield took a 1-0 lead early in the first, as Jon Sorg scored his sixth goal of the season less than four minutes into the game. Sorg's shot deflected off a Falcons player and lit the lamp for the advantage. The Condors continued to pound the Fresno net with shots, at one time leading 8-0. They took the lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes.
Terry Friesen took the reigns of this one during the second period, as the Fresno netminder stood on his head the rest of the night. He stopped shot after shot fired at him by Bakersfield, and when the smoke cleared from the middle frame, he had stopped 34 shots and maintained the 1-0 score through 40 minutes. The Condors could not convert on their power play chances, going 0-for-7 through the first two periods. Joel Martin, meanwhile, played a strong game between the pipes for the Condors. The rookie turned aside 15 shots through two periods, including several on Fresno's five power plays.
In the third period, the Falcons broke through. Glen Gulutzan scored just 17 seconds into the final period to tie the game at 1-1. Jason Weaver gave Fresno the lead less than a minute later, backhanding his own rebound past the sprawled out Martin to make it 2-1. At 4:45 of the final stanza, Alex Todd stripped the puck away from the Condors defense and came in 2-on-0 against Martin with Cory Mullin, and finished the play himself for the final tally of the game. The final shots on goal were 47-23 in favor of Bakersfield, who dropped their first regulation game against Fresno in 11 games this season.
The Condors host Anchorage on Saturday night, in a 7:00pm start from Centennial Garden. The ZOOperstars make their return to the Garden to entertain the crowd. Bakersfield will have a new netminder between the pipes, as Danielle Dube is expected to make her second career start tomorrow night. She is just the third woman to ever play professional hockey, and the second in WCHL history.
