Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Steelheads made its first regular season visit to Canada count for two much-needed points tonight as the team beat the Victoria Salmon Kings 3-1 at the Bear Mountain Arena. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Idaho scored three unanswered goals in the second period. The win moves Idaho six points out of a playoff spot behind the Fresno Falcons in the West Division.

Idaho's rookie goalie Frank Doyle stopped 19 of 20 shots, improving his record to 17-11-2, while Victoria's recent addition, NHL netminder Dan Blackburn, stopped 29 of 32 in his second loss of three games played.

Victoria scored first, with a backhander from Ryan Wade that got up over Doyle's right shoulder at 3:18 of the first period. Victoria had the first power play of the night just seconds later, but couldn't do anything with it.

At the 3:29 mark of the second frame, Warren Peters tallied his 12th of the season, a power play goal, to knot the game at one. Then, with Victoria on the power play, Dan Vandermeer came up with a shorthanded breakaway, but was pulled down in front of the net and was subsequently awarded a penalty shot. Blackburn made the save, giving Idaho an 0-of-4 record on the season in penalty shots. However, Idaho took the lead a few minutes later with a goal by Riley Riddell and then grabbed a two-goal lead as Vandermeer finally got his way with a one-timer and scored his third of the year at 17:02.

Of Note: Idaho added two defensemen to its line up tonight - Sean Peach, a member of the 2004 Steelheads Kelly Cup Championship team, came out of retirement and British Columbia native Kevin Hoffman was added to the roster to compensate for a shorthanded Steelheads squad.

The puck drops at 8:00 MST Wednesday night for Game 2 of the two-game series in the battle of the fish.
