Steelheads: Game Day Storylines- at Norfolk
Published on November 18, 2016 under ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Steel Reel The Steelheads and Admirals gear up for the second meeting of their three-game series on Friday night in Norfolk, two days after the Steelheads took the opening matchup in a penalty-filled affair. The Steelheads set a season-high with 56 minutes in penalties, much of which was earned at the end of the second period when the teams squared off in a post-buzzer brawl that yielded 66 penalty minutes between the two teams and three game misconducts. When the dust settled, the Steelheads had gutted out a 6-4 win, their third consecutive win and seventh in nine games, while the Admirals are still looking for their first victory at home.
Power Players... The Steelheads were trailing 3-2 late in the second period on Wednesday when their power play came to life. Idaho entered the game with the second-ranked power play in the ECHL, and that power play clicked three times in a span of 4:42 to turn that 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Defenseman Joe Faust started things off for Idaho with his fifth goal of the season, tied for the league lead among defensemen, and his second on the power play. Will Merchant followed that up with two power play goals, the first two goal game of his pro career. Merchant has scored all five of his goals this season on the power play and leads the ECHL in that category. The Steelheads' three power play goals were their most in a game this season. They have scored power play goals in 12 of 14 games this season and lead the ECHL at 26,3 percent.
Road Improvement... The Steelheads have won three consecutive games on the road after dropping their first three games this year away from CenturyLink Arena. Their current streak is already just one win shy of their longest road winning streak from last season, when the team was 19-13-4 as visitors. The Steelheads' recent success coming from behind has also followed them outside Boise. In two of their past three road games, the Steelheads have trailed beyond the midway point of the second period and found a way back to win.
Right back at it... Jefferson Dahl's career-best points streak was snapped at ten games in Boise, last weekend, but he wasted no time getting back on the scoresheet. Dahl scored a goal and added two assists on Wednesday night, his second three-point performance of the season. Dahl ranks sixth in the ECHL scoring race with 18 points. Dating back to last season, Dahl has not gone more than two games without at least a point since March 11th.
