Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The ECHL on Thursday announced that Idaho rookie defenseman Mike Gabinet will replace teammate Jonathan Zion on the National Conference roster for the 2006 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Bud Light on January 25th at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. Defenseman Jonathan Zion had originally been selected, along with Steelheads D'Arcy McConvey and Garett Bembridge, but left the team last week to play for HIFK Helsinki of the SM-Liiga - the Finnish Elite League
The Fresno Falcons are the host for the 2006 ECHL All-Star Skills Competition on January 24th and the 2006 ECHL All-Star Game presented by Bud Light on January 25th. Both events will be at Save Mart Center and begin at 7 p.m. PT.
Selected in the eighth round (237th overall) by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and in his first professional season in North America, the 24-year-old Gabinet has a game-winning goal and three points (1g-2a) in 11 games for the Steelheads. Gabinet began the 2005-06 season in the Edmonton Oilers training camp. The 6-foot-3 and 210-pound Gabinet played professionally in Finland in 2004-05 and had three points (2g-1a) and 46 penalty minutes in 54 games. He played four seasons at the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he had 47 points (6g-41a) and 138 penalty minutes in 130 career games.
In other news today:
Steelheads Head Coach Derek Laxdal announced that Right Wing Justin Cox has been called up to the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League. Forward David Graham has been signed to play for the weekend.
Laxdal said of the moves, "I'm happy to see Justin get a chance to play at the next level, but it leaves us shorthanded. We've signed David to be an extra body through the weekend in Justin's absence."
The Steelheads kick off an eight-game homestand beginning tonight against the Victoria SalmonKings at Qwest Arena.
