SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have announced a "Cooking with the Gulls" promotion with the Embrace program. Gulls players will attend Embrace's cooking class on Jan. 17 at O'Farrell Middle School in the Encanto area of Southeast San Diego, Calif.

Embrace is a multi-cultural obesity prevention program that delivers the following services to fifth and sixth grade children: pre- and post-testing of height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and resting blood pressure, aerobic exercise at least two times per week, nutrition curriculum, diversity curriculum and healthy cooking classes for the children and their parents. The program's slogan is "Unity Through Health."

A featured component of the Embrace program is healthy cooking classes that are offered to the children and their parents at O'Farrell Middle School. The classes are offered at least one time per month and focuses on teaching the children and their parents how to prepare culturally appropriate meals in a healthy manner. The parents are encouraged to participate because they purchase and prepare the food that the children eat at home. The parents and children do not simply watch food being prepared, they are taught to cook it.

The first installment of "Cooking with the Gulls" will take place Tuesday, Jan. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Gulls players Doug MacIver and Darren Clark are scheduled to attend (subject to change). The two will also be available for pictures and autographs with the kids and parents.

The Embrace program is funded in part by the Jacobs Family Foundation, Sony and Whole Foods, Hillcrest.
