Boise, Idaho - Salmon Kings' forward Lanny Gare buried two goals in the third period to lead the charge, as the visitors netted four tallies in the final 20 minutes of play to erase a one-goal deficit and win 7-5 in front of 3,465 fans at Qwest Arena on Thursday night.

The loss dropped the Steelheads to 9-7-1 on home ice and 21-12-2 overall. The Salmon Kings improved to 13-23-1 and just 7-15-0 away from home.

For the first time in the season series, the Salmon Kings scored the first goal of the game. In the previous six meetings, the Steelheads claimed the first goal, going 3-2-1 in those matches. Late in the first period, Salmon Kings' captain Ryan Wade tallied his 11th of the season through the legs of goaltender Matt Yeats (seven saves). Forwards Dallas Anderson and Seth Leonard assisted on the goal, at 16:33 of the first period.

The second period saw the Salmon Kings pad their lead with an even-strength goal at 53 seconds of the period, and another marker at 5:04 of the frame. Defenseman Simon Mangos gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, while forward Mike Wirll made the score 3-0. Allowing three goals on just 10 shots, Yeats was pulled in favor of rookie Steve Silverthorn (11 saves).

The Steelheads responded, just 16 seconds after Wirll's goal, when defenseman Mike Gabinet snapped a shot over the right shoulder of Salmon Kings' goaltender Rob McVicar (34 saves). Veteran forward Scott Burt drew the lone helper, as he fed Gabinet in the left circle.

Winger Garett Bembridge then banged home a rebound on the power play at the 10:01 mark of the frame, getting the Steelheads to within one at 3-2. Forward Mike Stutzel and Gabinet assisted on Bembridge's ECHL-leading 29th of the season.

The comeback was complete 63 seconds later as Jeremy Mylymok's right point shot whizzed past McVicar and snuck inside the far post. Forward Marty Flichel had the lone assist.

At the second intermission, the score was even at 3-3.

Flichel put the Steelheads in front for the first time in the contest just 1:46 into the third period. Rookie Kevin Gardner hit Flichel with a pass behind the Salmon Kings' defense, and he fired a shot over McVicar's glove hand for his 13th of the year. Forward Matt Reid, who started the play, also drew an assist.

Gare's first of the night came just seventy seconds after Flichel's goal, and started the four-goal barrage for the visitors.

The four goals the Salmon Kings netted in the third period, tied a season-high for an opposition. The Steelheads have now allowed four goals in a period three times this season, and twice in the final stanza of a contest in the past seven outings.

Gardner made it 7-5 with just over a minute left in regulation, as Burt added his second assist of the contest. Burt then had a goal waved off with 66 seconds left, and the Steelheads comeback hopes were dashed.

Four players from each side picked up multiple points in the game. Silverthorn (10-8-0) took the loss, his fifth straight appearance that resulted in a defeat. McVicar (5-6-0) earned his fifth win of the year and his second in three games against the Steelheads. The final shots were 39-25 in favor of the Steelheads, and 15-7 in the third period alone.

These two clubs hook up again on Friday, January 13. It's the final meeting of the season between the division foes. Faceoff is at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, KTIK "The Ticket" beginning approximately 20 minutes prior to the drop of the puck.
