Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Greenville Grrrowl picked up a 5-4 shootout win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Thursday night at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville. The contest was the make-up game from the December 16th contest that was cancelled due to icy conditions in Greenville and lack of power at the Bi-Lo Center. Despite the shootout loss, the Gladiators picked up a point to move into sole possession of first place in the American Conference South Division.
Looking to avoid a repeat of Tuesday's game in Greenville where the Gladiators fell behind less than one minute into the game, Gwinnett was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead on Danny Eberly's 5th goal of the season. The defenseman beat Greenville goaltender Mike Morrison with a wrist shot from the blue line. Milan Gajic and Scott Kelman hooked up to set up the power play goal at 9:06 of the first period.
Rory McMahon tied the game at one as he slipped past a Gladiators defenseman and rolled the puck past Gwinnett netminder Chad Collins for the tally. Les Haggett picked up an assist on the Greenville tally 13:25 into the first period.
Greenville took a 2-1 lead 7:57 into the second period on a goal by Mike Knight as he deflected a shot past Collins for the tally. Jan Vodrazka hooked up with Haggett to set up the go-ahead tally for the Grrrowl.
John Snowden pushed the Grrrowl lead to two goals ripping a slap shot from the slot past Collins for the goal. Jason Jozsa and Colin Pepperall picked up the assists in the tally for the Greenville power play goal at 9:30 of the second period.
Gwinnett got one of the two, second period goals back on the power play at the 13:10 mark of the second period. Derek Nesbitt slipped the puck past Morrison on a breakaway for his 13th goal of the season. Chad Collins moved the puck quickly up the wing to Milan Gajic. Gajic rolled the puck along to Nesbitt to set up the tally.
Greenville scored 29 seconds into the third period to take a 4-2 lead. Pepperall beat Collins with a quick snapshot for the goal. John Snowden and Brock Radunske picked up the assists on the tally.
The Gladiators continued to battle in the third period as Guillaume Desbiens posted his 17th goal of the season to cut the Greenville lead to 3-2. Finding the puck loose in the slot in a scrable, Desbiens jammed the puck past Morrison for the tally. Jeff Campbell and Scott Mifsud picked up the assists on the goal.
Campbell equalized the contest with a power play goal 2:25 after Gwinnett cut the Greenville lead to one goal. Campbell roofed the puck up over Morrison off a feed out of the corner from Desbiens on a 2-on-1 break. Milan Gajic picked up his third assist of the night on the goal at 16:55 of the third period.
Greenville picked up the win in the shootout as John Snowden's shootout tally was the difference. Each team had some chances in the overtime but Collins and Morrison stood strong for their respective teams.
Collins made 18 saves in the shootout loss as the Gladiators fall to 21-7-5 on the season. Gwinnett remains winless in the shootout dropping their fifth shootout loss this year. The Gladiators also finished 3-of-8 on the power play while picking up a point in the shootout loss.
