Steelheads Fall To Wranglers 3-2

Boise, ID - Despite 32 saves from goaltender Steve Silverthorn and Marty Flichel's team-leading 11th goal of the season, the Steelheads lost to the Las Vegas Wranglers, 3-2, in front of 3,450 fans at Qwest Arena on Wednesday night.

The win keeps the Wranglers (10-1-2-5) winning streak intact at six games, while the Steelheads (11-4-1-1) lose their first game in regulation on home ice. The Steelheads remain in first place in the West Division with 24 points, four points ahead of the idle Phoenix RoadRunners.

The Wranglers opened the game's scoring at 2:55 of the first period on a left point shot by defenseman Lee Green. Green's shot sailed over the head of Silverthorn who was screened on the play. Derek Edwardson got the only assist.

Just 1:15 later, the Wranglers made it 2-0 on a goal by Tyler Mosienko. Defenseman Ryan Bonni and forward Marco Peluso assisted on Mosienko's team-leading eighth of the season.

Late in the first period, the Steelheads cut the deficit in half on Flichel's power play goal. The Hodgeville, Saskatchewan native moved out from the left circles and into the slot where he wristed a shot past Wranglers' goaltender Kevin Nastiuk (29 saves) to make it 2-1. Defensemen Darrell Hay and Mike Gabinet got the helpers on Flichel's tally.

The only goal in the second period came from Edwardson, as he was able to convert on the man advantage at 5:11, with Steve Crampton and Bonni setting up his fourth of the season.

Through two periods, the shots favored the Wranglers at 23-18.

The Steelheads got to within a goal early in the third period on Tuomas Mikkonen's sixth of the campaign. Lance Galbraith and Colin Peters were credited with the assists.

Silverthorn (10-3-1-1) suffers his third regulation loss of the season, while Nastiuk jumps to 3-0-0-1. Both teams finished one-for-seven on the power play. The final shots were 35-31 in favor of the visitors.

The Steelheads continue their three-game series against the Las Vegas Wranglers on Friday, December 1. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST.
