Steelheads' Comeback Falls Just Short in Orlando
November 12, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Orlando, FL - The two teams combined for six goals in a wild third period, but at the end of regulation the Orlando Solar Bears (5-3-1) held off the Idaho Steelheads (4-6-2) by a 5-4 score at Amway Center.
The Steelheads found themselves trailing by just a goal at the start of the third period, but that deficit quickly ballooned. Matt Rupert jammed a puck through Maxime Lagace at the side of the net just ten seconds into the third period for his second goal of the game to make it 3-1. Just 1:20 later, Mark Louis weaved down form the right point and walked to the front of the net to slide the puck past Lagace. Lindsay sparks scored on the power play shortly after to give Orlando three goals in the period's first 3:04 and a 5-1 lead.
Idaho roared back, with Colton Beck in particular. Beck scored twice in the third period, once on a nifty feed through the crease from Rob Linsmayer at 6:14 and then again at 10:17 on a wrister off a face-off from the top of the left circle. The Steelheads power play made it a 5-4 game when Zack Kamrass' drive from the right point through traffic beat goaltender Ryan Massa to pull the Steelheads back within a goal.
Idaho pulled the goalie late and challenged, but couldn't find the last goal.
The Steelheads opened the scoring at 6:20 of the first period with Taylor Peters' fifth of the season, a break-away on a nifty pass from Beck, who had a four-point night. The Solar Bears answered back with two goals in the second, Rupert's first of the night and Brett Findlay's sixth of the season.
Maxime Lagace made 25 saves in his Steelheads debut after being assigned by AHL Texas earlier in the day.
The Steelheads and Florida Everblades play Friday night at Germain Arena, with puck-drop at 5:30pm MT.
STEELHEADS STATS:

Maxime Lagace: 25 saves on 30 shots

STEELHEADS COORS LIGHT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME

Play of the Game:
Matt Rupert's second goal of the game was a deflator for Idaho. The Steelheads had just killed off a big penalty kill, with one second left on that kill to start the third period. The Steelheads controlled the center ice face-off but turned the puck over working back into their own end. Two quick passes and Rupert was at the side of the net alone to put Idaho down two goals. Giving up that goal just ten seconds into the period and just after a penalty kill on a D-zone turnover was tough on a team already looking at a comeback. The two goals that followed shortly after were the result, and the Steelheads just couldn't quite overcome it.
