Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - Harold Arauz and Jose Hernandez combined to strike out nine batters, while Bobby Wernes posted his 17th multi-hit game of the year, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell 3-0 to the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Ballpark, in Staten Island, N.Y., on Wednesday night.

The contest, which kicked off the final three-game road series Tri-City will play during the regular season, was a pitchers duel throughout.

Getting the start for the 'Cats was Arauz, who matched a season-high with five innings pitched, while striking out four batters, and allowing only two runs, both of which came in the bottom of the fourth.

Following Arauz was Hernandez, who tossed three frames, striking out five batters, and letting only one run score.

Unfortunately, the 'Cats bats could not figure out Staten Island starter Domingo Acevedo, as the right-hander allowed only two hits and two walks, while registering eight strikeouts in six innings.

Tri-City was able to put two runners aboard in the top of the ninth, thanks to back-to-back singles by Bobby Wernes and Dexture McCall. However, Yankees left-handed reliever Jonny Drozd induced a game-ending double play to hand the 'Cats the 3-0 defeat.

Offensively, Tri-City was led in the hit column by Wernes, who finished 2-for-4, while Brooks Marlow (1-for-4 with a double), and McCall (1-for-4) contributed base hits as well.

With the Lowell Spinners defeating the Aberdeen IronBirds 10-7, the ValleyCats magic number to clinch their 4th Stedler Division title in a row remains at two.

Tri-City will now look to continue its march towards a playoff birth on Thursday, in the second game of this three-game series, against Staten Island. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be RHP Chris Murphy (2-1, 2.74), with RHP James Kaprielian (0-1, 3.38) getting the start for the Yankees.
