Lowell Spinners News Release

ABERDEEN, MD. - The Lowell Spinners entered the home stretch of the New York-Penn League schedule with some work to do to reach the playoffs. After scoring four first inning runs only to watch the Aberdeen IronBirds pull even in the bottom half, the Spinners bats stayed busy churning out 11 hits en route to a 10-7 win to start the three-game series Wednesday night in Aberdeen.

The win allowed the Spinners to remain two-games back in the chase for the Wild Card, with outcomes still to come for State College, West Virginia and Hudson Valley, who won the first half of a double header with the Vermont Lake Monsters.

Lowell (36-35) got the scoring started right out the gate with a four-run first inning. Consecutive singles by Chad De La Guerra, Tyler Spoon and Victor Acosta staked the Spinners a 1-0 lead. With Acosta stealing second, the throw ended up in centerfield and Spoon came home to score. After walks by Kyri Washington and Tucker Tubbs loaded the bases, Tate Matheny delivered a two-run single to give Lowell a 4-0 lead.

Aberdeen (36-35) answered promptly in the bottom half of the inning after Cedric Mullins led off the inning with a triple to right and came in to score one batter later on an RBI groundout by Drew Turbin. With two out and two on, Alex Murphy hit a three-run home run to left to tie the game at four.

The Spinners re-took the lead in the third inning. Doubles by Acosta and Washington, sandwiched around an error allowing Acosta to score and Josh Ockimey to reach plated a pair and Jhon Nunez brought home Washington with a run-scoring single to give Lowell a 7-4 lead.

After Lowell added a run in the top of the fourth inning the IronBirds got one back in the bottom half, taking advantage of a two-out walk to make it an 8-5 game.

A Jhon Nunez sacrifice fly in the fifth put Lowell up 9-5, Aberdeen struck for a pair in the sixth against reliever Michael Gunn. With two runs in and two men on, Matt Kent came out of the pen to induce a groundout to get the Spinners out of the inning with a 9-7 lead.

The Spinners had a chance to break the game open in the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Spoon lined out to center and after a walk to Acosta plated a run, Ockimey struck out swinging to leave them loaded.

Washington, De La Guerra, Acosta and Matheny all had two-hit games, with Matheny, Acosta and Nunez driving in two each and Washington scoring three runs.

After allowing four runs in the first, Austin Glorius (2-2, 2.92) settled down to allow just one run over the next four innings. He was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks, striking out eight. Gunn was charged with two runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning before Kent came on for 3.1 scoreless to pick up his first save. He struck out one.

The Spinners send Jose Almonte to the mound tomorrow as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. First pitch in Aberdeen is set for 7pm.
